Work on the plant started when Yamaha signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu government for investing Rs 1500 crore in the plant. The plant will have a total capacity of 1.8 million units which includes both scooters and motorcycles. It could also be used for exports.
Currently exports are done out of the Yamaha's Surajpur plant in Greater Noida, which has an annual capacity of 1 million units. Spare parts are manufactured in a factory in Faridabad.
The company has a very small market share in India and in the previous Financial Year sold just 3.5 lakh units, which included 30000 scooters. Yamaha is hoping the Ray will help increase market share. Exports of the company stood at 1.4 lakh units to Asean and South American countries.
