  • KTM in Moto2 and WSBK - Stefan Pierer: xBhp News

In a recent interview, KTM CEO Stefan Pierer spoke about the intent of the company to get into Moto2 and also WSB with the RC 8. Currently KTM is doing a fantastic job of racing in Moto3.

MotoGP and WSBK is too expensive for KTM, as they don't hope to gain as much.

So WSB is too expensive at the moment?

Considering what you did in Moto3 and how fast that championship-winning technology was put together would it be quite quick to make that Superbike team happen when you give it the green light?
Yes and on that level we already have the ingredients. The two cylinder engine in a developed state is powerful and it can be done but it is just a budget issue and you need an experience team manager and good riders, especially in the development phase. To be fast is one thing but to explain what is needed to win is another. I remember almost ten years ago when we started with the 125cc two-stroke in MotoGP we were struggling in the first year but then we got Casey Stoner as our young rider and he was the guy that brought the motorcycle to the edge and a competitive level and it is similar in motocross. If you use a retired test rider then it does not help you but if you put on Tony Cairoli or Jeffrey Herlings then there is a difference.

But you have ten times world champion Stefan Everts as a test rider!

Where does he say anything about Moto2??? Also, does getting into Moto2 make any sense with the current rules and the way it is setup currently? Moto2 is primarily a single make engine/ single make tyre class. Currently, the single make engine is the CBR 600 engine for which Dorna awarded Honda a long term contract. Dorna then supplies these engines to teams as free of cost. So essentially it is class where suspension and frame can be innovated on and that's the reason we see these frame makers like Kalex, FTR, etc, in the class. Why would a bike manufacturer who designs and makes their own engine work on someone else's engine??? What do they gain out of it?

Correction: my bad, he talks about Moto2, but only that he is 'working' on it? Whatever that means...

Stefan Pierer sure has plans & hopes. 'guess all giants have financial issues at times. No wonder, India continues to grow as a market.

There have been talks about the Moto2 rules being completely overhauled post 2014. KTM is probably trying to get its foot in the door for when the rule changes do come. In the current scenario they cannot participate in anything but Moto3.
