The Base Rate of Motorcycle Registration Tax has been increased across the country.
The Union Government has increased the Floor Rate of Motorcycle Registration Tax to 6% across the country. States can then decide whether they would like to charge additional tax over and above the base rate. NO state will be allowed to charge tax below the mandatory 6%. xBhp had earlier reported about this proposal in February 2012.

Currently all the states have different tax structures. People to avoid paying higher taxes, get their vehicles registered from neighbouring states, by doing this, the Govt. hopes to stream line the tax system.
States like Maharashtra and Karnataka which have higher taxes will continue to charge at the existing rate, but states like Haryana which currently charge 3% tax, will have to charge double at 6%. These recommendations from the Central Govt. will be enforced from the 1st of April 2014.

"These are recommendations to the states, we are trying to prevail upon them,"
"In our various discussions over the proposal there seem to be a clear idea that a uniform tax is not possible, nobody (state) will agree to it and so we decided that let us agree on a floor/base rate and it is in common interest of everyone,"
