UM Motorcycles has motorcycles in the range of 100 to 400cc, India will first get the Renegade series of motorcycles. The Renegade series includes the 230cc Commando and the 200cc Renegade Sport. These bikes are expected to be priced around Rs 1.5 Lakh. Subsequently the 300-400cc bikes will also be launched in the country and are expected around the 2 lakh price point.
The American company which is a strong player in South America and Africa is currently in talks to start a Joint Venture in India, which is expected to be finalised this month. The JV will see an investment of Rs 100crore in an assembly plant. Dealers for these motorcycles will be appointed from July onwards, and will be available in 15 cities across the country. The bikes will be initially brought in as CKDs and will be assembled here. But 40-50% of local parts sourcing is the aim to keep costs down. The assembly plant will initially roll out 5000 units every month and later increased to 15000 units, with a third to be exported to Southeast Asia.
UM will also be bringing in bikes in the 100cc commuter segment, but that will only after 2-3 years, as it first intends to consolidate in the larger capacity market.
Interestingly, UM has set up an R&D Centre in Delhi which is currently working on two new engines developed specifically for India. This includes a 350cc water cooled v-twin engine.
