May be you are right bro...i had just put forward a theory...never seen such a thing happen.

although theory is good, in my opinion, it seems remote possibility for two reasons -

if intake valve stuck and flame front did move along intake manifold, it has to cross the carb or FI unit and then cross the fuel pipe and reach the petrol tank, and it will take some time, coz explosion can only occur in tank when petrol burns and pressure is created. even if carb catches fire, it should only burn and not explode.

second if intake valve was jammed, that means overhead cam should also jam leading to everything jammed and open valve may also hit piston, thereby jamming everything and the person should not be able to kick the bike anymore. just a theory.
Petrol ignition needs very high temp spark..kinds that are caused by very high voltages. So petrol vehicle has high voltage coils. That kind of voltage is not found in rest of electrical circuit.
Unless petrol is dripping exactly right onto a red hot wire , its unlikely it would catch fire due to low tem spark of 12volt circuit.
Then again its unlikely to find red hot wire without fuse getting blown up.
Fuel level cum pump unit in modern cars is actually immersed in fuel and works on 12volts safely.

Also petrol vapour out in the open air is far too lean to catch fire . that is the way even in accident where petrol tank leaks and fuel is all over spilled all over the vehicle.

Intake valve and cam does not have fixed link connection.
If valve is stuck open , cam will still keep rotating as normal , just that its lobe will not touch the tappet.
Valve does not need to opened up fully , if seat fails or develops a crack , compression will push charge back into entire intake system.

Unless valve is actually open enough to foul with piston , mechanical system will not prevent kick starting or ignition. Just half a mm of open valve is more than required.

Where the flame front will meet reservoir of carb and ignite good 50ml of fuel.
Which will be good to melt the rubber fuel line and fresh supply of fuel to fire.

Re: Man dies in bike explosion !

Couple of years ago, when I was a teenager, I read a story in newspaper which said one was heavily injured while kickstarting his motorcycle as there was a bomb connected to his bike, it as in his own home IIRC. Don't remember hat happened after that.
I am back!

I think one needs good amount of fuel and that too in a closed casing and too much of temperature to explode like a bomb, but here is a person who was kick starting his bike and it explodes like a bomb, some foul play can also be involved in this incident as said by Cleaner, it should be properly investigated but sadly that's not going to happen.

Although I never came across such a case, I have seen melted electrical connectors before. And if I remember right they (and the wiring loom) had been re-routed wrongly...

I also heard of cases where voltage rectifiers had to be re-positioned in an area with better air flow because they were getting too hot and caused fires! Apparently this was a problem on some Ducatis.

Re: Man dies in bike explosion !

My ZMA had a loud explosion when my wife and I were taking our first long ride in 2010! We were returning from our ride to Pondy (>300kms that day) just waiting in a traffic signal near my home, when I tried starting the bike (with electric start). There was a loud explosion... infact all got scared, even the traffic constable. But there was no visible sign of damage...and my ears were a bit deaf from the noise. I noticed that the meters didn't work, so I kick started and rode home without electricals (headlight, horn etc). A week later I took it to a Exide battery shop and noticed a cracked battery with all the fluid drained below - a blown battery! even the exide certified mechanic repeated that it could only happen in an explosion...

I cannot believe a similar explosion could kill.. the zma battery actually sits between the rider and pillion legs...

Hope the police investigate this incident for battery explosion.

OT: a colleague's friend's VW Polo had an explosion in Nagpur last week. The driver was severely injured and is recovering in a hospital. The reason cited was that the climate-controlled aircon set to 20C blew up due to the heat wave of over 45C. No complaints filed yet as the person is still recovering. I am not sure what VW will have to say.

I stay in parel and there is no such news in recent days. So I looked up at top of news it shows "V Narayan,TNN | Mar 29, 2013, 02.54 AM IST".
