Yamaha is expecting sales of scooters and motorcycles will hit 20 million by 2017, and hopes its share will be 2.2 million. To ensure that this happens, the production capability in the country will be ramped up in India. From Yamaha's view point, India provides a reliable vendor base which gives the best mixture of costs and service.
Company officials have said that high end models may be produced in India and exported to Japan and ASEAN countries, while the low end models will be manufactured for export to African countries. Currently Yamaha is betting on the scooter segment with its Ray, due to the success of other Japanese Manufacturer Honda.
The ultra cheap motorcycles that will be produced are expected to be in the Rs 35000/- price range. Queering the pitch for Hero and also for Honda who are expected to launch motorcycles in the base segment.

back to 90's
? cause it was r15 and fz that got the balls rolling for Yamaha after a really looong time since the Rx days.i still remember those horrible 90s and early 2000s-that mantis look-alike bike, saif ali khan libero ads and bronze chromed 125cc cruiser called enticer(was actually good looking though) competing with hh cbz, bajaj pulsar, lml adreno and tvs fiero f2.
lower displacement bike for boosting the sales is a good idea but people in India always brand Yamaha as a premium motorcycle .... They have to release a product that should break the Hero, Bajaj and Honda products in order to find a place in mass market provided the Yamaha marketing strategy should be way different from now .... Many who consider buying a new bike are choosing between the products Hero, Bajaj, Honda and even TVS has no one is even aware that Yamaha has bikes called YBR series its a sad thing for a universal leading company like Yamaha ... First release vehicles for the present market and change the marketing strategy ... I don't know how many liked Yamaha Ray marketed as a women's scooter
