  • Kawasaki India targets 30-40% growth: xBhp News

Aiming to garner a larger pie in the premium superbike segment, Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer Kawasaki pegs to grow at 30-40 per cent during the current financial year, according to a company official.

"Last year, our cumulative sale was 250 units. Currently, the superbike market is growing around 30 to 40 per cent year-on-year. Yes. We expect to grow with the market...," India Kawasaki Motor, Deputy Director, Shigeto Nishikawa told reporters, after launching the company's fourth exclusive outlet, here today.

Currently, India Kawasaki Motors has exclusive retail outlets in Pune, Bangalore and Delhi.

Declining to reveal any figures, he said the company currently holds less than 10 per cent of the market share in the super bike category.

Kawasaki sells the motorcycles as completely built unit in India and competes with Harley Davidson and Triumph Motorcycles in the superbike category.

Jai Autos, one of the main retailers for Bajaj Auto in Tamil Nadu, has partnered with Kawasaki to sell the superbikes.

"Premium motorcycles above 800 cc will be sold under India Kawasaki Motors while 300 and upto 650 cc would be sold under KTM outlets..", he said.

Noting that 'Z-800' model was driving sales for Kawasaki in India, Nishikawa said the company would soon introduce its motorcycles in green colour along with existing black color.

According to Jai Autos, Managing Partner, A V Jayachandran a 250cc Kawasaki Ninja would be introduced soon. "It will be sold along with the current 300cc and 600cc range models", he said.

Kawasaki retails Z-800 base model priced at Rs 9.15 lakh (on-road price Chennai) while top variant ZX14 R is available at Rs 18.95 lakh (on-road price Chennai).

    News Approved.

So, let me summarize the news:

    1. Kawasaki aiming for sales numbers.
    2. And a 250cc Ninja being on the cards (single cylinder? probably. 4 Cylinder?? We pray so!)

In the same showroom, there will be RCs and Dukes just waiting to be sold... so despite Kawasaki's merits, the single cylinder might not sell great unless priced very well. And no additional reputational benefit too, unless its seen a lot on the roads. We know it already made 250-twin and all...

Kawasaki's approach to the Indian market, I believe has been the safest. They're the least diluted among the Japanese here, and with a staunch focus on "performance oriented" image building, they actually have a reputation.

I believe they can achieve 30-40% growth easily, but not with the safe-step strategy they're adopting right now. If they are so selective about their dealership's product line, they'll have happier owners due to good service and company control over the owner's experience, but sales just doesn't come this way.

Although, I prefer Kawasaki playing it safe as usual. This method doesn't grant much sales though.

The new 250 will be the Z250. Not Ninja as far as I know.

After the release of KTM RC's Kawasaki has increased the price of Ninja 300 by 10k I don't think they can grow 30 - 40% this way.

Find a means to reduce the cost by 30-40% and the growth would definitely be more than 30-40%

I think they have plans to introduce sub 800 cc models to India which will have more volumes which should provide them some motivation to expand the dealership and service centers.
However they should do something about the price. Even though a person wanting a ninja will still shell out the money those who are not particular about brand will not if good alternatives are available at more competitive rates. They cannot increase their market share by just aiming for ninja fans.
