  • Study shows, lane splitting is safe: xBhp News

The California Highway Patrol, after a year long study has come to the conclusion that lane splitting by motorcycles is safe.

The study that involved 8262 motorcycle crashes came to the conclusion that motorcycle lane splitting is not any more dangerous than regular motorcycle riding, provided that certain guidelines regarding lane splitting is followed. A year ago the CHP had come out with a set of guidelines for motorcycles to safely split lanes, but these had to be taken down after protests from motorists. The guidelines given were -

    1. If you split lanes, make sure you ride no more than 10 mph faster than the traffic (16 km/h)
    2. If traffic moves at more than 30 mph (48 km/h), you should not split lanes
    3. It's safer to split lanes 1 and 2
    4. Look around you carefully before deciding to split lanes
    5. Keep in mind that other road users might not be aware of you coming between the lanes.

Hmm, we seem to be ahead of them on this one, forget motorcycles even 4 wheelers split lanes here on routine basis. For us it is not about lane splitting, rather more economical use of road area.
Its almost criminal to leave so much tarmac space unused in our country.

And the most wonderful part is where bikes jump on to footpath and then honk angrily on pedestrians to move aside!!

Pedestrians are no less buddy. They get on the road and walk like they're in a park or on picnic or something. I have had one too many bad encounters with such idiots. One almost made me crash, I escaped luckily but it could have gone way worse.

A bit OT, yesterday I was taking a right turn (indicators were on and working, I was in the right lane) and just when I'd crossed rightmost lane of the other side, I was overtaken by a car... and I was like wtf... Given the speed of the car even a slight contact would have landed me in the hospital.

We are in the land full of idiots .
The land where people curse you if you stop at red lights .
The land which looks you as a fool if you go a km to take a U turn instead of going in opp lane .
So its our duty to be ready for anything, look at the mirrors and turn back and look before making turns .

Its because of people like this that law abiding citizens also get harassed by the law and media. Shame on them. I do hope you got the bastards license plate number.

"Lanes what lanes... ahh you mean the stupid lines adorning the roads for no particular reason" - Thats what you get if you ask an average rider about keeping to a lane . In fact you will routinely see vehicles travelling on the right most lane present on expressways for overtaking

Funny how we in India have more Americans than America. Everybody here seems to love riding and driving on the wrong side of the road. Its as if they don't know which side "left" is.

Also did you all know that a flyover is the best place for overtaking and traffic jams are the best place to try out you new horns?

The traffic management in this country is retarded and road etiquette is just a myth. God save india
