  • HMSI gets tax refund for 15 years in Gujarat: xBhp News

The Gujarat state government today informed the state assembly that Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India would get an array of benefits, including refund of net tax paid by it for 15 years, for its manufacturing plant at Vithalapur village in Ahmedabad district.

The revelation came during question hour on the first day of the Gujarat Assembly session today.

Congress MLA from Viramgam Tejashree Patel sought details from the Gujarat government about the agreement signed between the state government and Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) about benefits given to the company's upcoming plant by the state.

Gujarat Chief Minister Anandi Patel who handles the industries portfolio, told the House in a written reply that the Gujarat government has signed a 'State Support Agreement' with HMSI for a proposed investment of Rs 1,100 crore for the plant.

In her written reply, she said that under the agreement, the Gujarat state government would waive off stamp duty and transfer charges on land bought by the company for the plant.

The Gujarat government has decided to give full waiver to the company on electricity duty for five years and a refund on net tax paid by company for 180 months (15 years), her reply said.

On September 30, when the agreement was signed, it was announced by the Gujarat government that HMSI would invest Rs 1,100 crore to set up its plant at Vithalapur to churn out 1.02 million two-wheelers from this facility.

What a bunch of jerks, tax break for a company which is leading the two wheeler market and making handsome profits. This shows the shortsightedness of our politicians and how well they understand economics. The Honda will nicely pocket the free money coming its way. It's a joke really, Honda chose Gujarat because it makes business sense for them not because they are after some free change.

There are other ways of taking out money from companies.. I feel that the employment and development of the state would make it a good deal for the state govt. Imagine what would the govt get when the thousands of employees of the firm build houses, pay stamp duty snd other taxes. Buy vehicles and pay road tax. Pay professional tax. Pay traffic fines and property taxes.
Every state does it, gujarat is also party to tax free lease provider states.

All that you said is right.
Another angle to it -- From a consumer point of view and as a company that is highly successful , they should pass on at least some of the benefits to the customer buying their bikes. It is not like they are providing employment out of charity or goodwill! They are using those employees to build products which they sell.

Just because a foreign firm setting up a firm in India won't benefit India in long term .

It may look good for now but in the long run we will suffer .
Its OK to attract FDI and exempting taxes but at the same time steps must be taken to ensure our development in our key areas to make other countries inviting us for investment.

Obligatory acche din :P While I hate to discuss politics on a motorcycling forum, I think that our government is taking a U-turn.

Now, in return, HMSI should perform fair amount of CSRs and social works apart from bringing down the OTRs of the bikes to some extent!
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

As a matter of goodwill, Honda will publish a blurry grainy photo of CBR300 being tested in some remote village in India, dates and prices still uncertain.
