  • Bajaj Chetak coming back?

Bajaj Chetak is rumored to be back soon, in gear-less avatar.
Mr Bajaj said sometime back that the scooter market doesn't have anything for BAL, but is the current 2 wheeler scene in India making him eat his words?

Luna is re-registered by Mahindra, Chetak maybe back, Vespa is back already. What next? Premier Padmini or Kiny Blaze? (No offence, I love Padmini/Blaze)

Exactly. India is still eagerly waiting for the successor of RD!

                Re: Bajaj Chetak coming back?

It is very much possible to have a recreated RD, if you're not so crazy about the low end torque. If Duke 390 can make the same outright power, but with not so much of low end torque, then a 2 cylinder 350cc RD will not be a bad idea... (read on)
...except for the name "RD" itself....

What looks will it sport? What tyres will it have? Alloys or spokes? Disk brake or drum? Naked? Faired? Half Faired? And if its going to be faired or half faired, what component of the bike, will remain of the legendary RD? Will it just be a RD on paper? If not, what will be similar to the old RD, once the 2 stroke engine is gone??
There are a tremendous amount of questions unanswered.

And that's the reason why I can't understand such decisions. Chetak's strengths were pulling power, gearbox, rough-tough construction, its reputation of durability & endurance, etc.
And with a 4 stroke automatic version of Chetak, I don't see these benefits. I only see people getting sad with old memories recalled. Of times that aren't coming back.

If Bajaj can have a 2 stroke engine with Fuel injection or something, then I do see a hope. But, if a 4 stroke automatic is all that is, then why did Krystal fail?
Same for Yamaha RD350, what's the point in insulting a legend, when you know that today, its anyways going to be a 4 Stroke?

Let exotics and antique remain as they are, and let the majority ride the latest stuff. All will remain happy this way.

                  .
What is the insult done here. Everyone in this world would love to see a RD back to life. We were just hoping that it could be revived, knowing that 4 stroke will deprive us of the fun what a 2-stroke will give. Whether it happens or not , its all together a differnt story.

No offense meant for "The Legend". We dont want "The Legend Killer" under the same name back, rather let it rest in peace.

Slight OT on the topic of revival.

Well, not specifically an insult, but more like 2 identities, with the older one being superior in minds of real bikers. We know 4 stroke will mostly never get the same low weight & spread-out powerband.
So, People will talk like this, "Yes, I have a RD... No no dude, not that new trash, the damn original older one. The punchy one. The one from 1987".
That's why the name should not be the same. Plus, if I was the new RD's designer for Yamaha, I would have no clue what all should be retained from the older RD, while keeping it modern at the same time.

Agree with you about the legend killer part. (You didn't mean "Bajaj Legend", did you?)

As far as hope for revival is concerned, I believe the YZF R3, with a 321cc twin cyl. engine, combined with a suitable aftermarket exhaust, should be an excellent product for today's times.
If you name it RD, your call. What's in a name anyways, buddy?

                      Re: Bajaj Chetak coming back?

My dad owns a 1987 Bajaj Chetak, working like a charm. He still goes to office on it, despite having 4 other vehicles including cars at home.
And nobody is allowed to ride the chetak, not even his own son. I wonder what his reactions will be on this??
Bring it on Bajaj, lets see what you got..
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

                        Re: Bajaj Chetak coming back?

IMHO, the new chetak (if launched) can never be like good old rough and tough chetak ! I dont think govt will allow a 2 stroke motor to be fitted. So our new chetak will just be another gearless 4s scooter with all plastic body panels and delicate spare parts. Regarding relaunch of RD 350, its just a dream which never comes true !!

Dad had 2 chetaks from different generations (1980's and late 90's) I am a fan of the Chetak Brand. I hope they will plonk in the Gasoline Direct Injection 2 Stroke engine from their auto-rickshaw. I wont mind buying one even if they discontinue the next day they launch it .

Need not necessarily be, Samarth. The Mini. The Beetle. The 500. Coming to bikes, the Vespas, the Bonnie, and not to forget, our very own RE. There were so many classics which were re-launched in modern avatars and turned out to be runaway superhits. What matters here is, the 'correct mix' of retro and modern. Offering a sub-par, run-of-the-mill product which shares no similarity with the original except the name will only result in a miserably laughable sequel.

Case in point, Chetak and RD do have massive potential to live up to their legendary names. Yamaha can always come up with a retro-classic RD, on the lines of the Bonneville, with an unchanged, classic design, but modern components. A 350cc twin will definitely make for a punchy machine. Re-map the R3 engine for better torque, add some goodies like FI, Monoshocks, alloys, digital displays (and most importantly, brakes that work!) and factory custom options (like the Ducati Scrambler) and I can already see a bestseller!

Same goes for the Chetak. Though only a geared scooter can do it justice as a sequel, but the mass market may prefer otherwise. A semi-automatic is most likely still in the sci-fi stage. (tiptronic for scooters, anyone?) Nevertheless, sleeker lines, disc brakes and alloys, a centered weight distribution, and most importantly, that rugged, yet comfortable feel - can work out in Bajaj's favor.

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!
