  • "Religare India Auto Urban Consumer Survey" report on 2-wheelers.

Religare Capital Market recently did a survey on consumer buying behaviour on two-wheelers. Here are the main findings.

Name:	Religare_Survey.jpg
Views:	1
Size:	99.2 KB
ID:	1989183Two-wheelers are viewed as a necessity, rather than a discretionary purchase.

    > Brand incumbency persists with Hero (motorcycles), Honda (scooters) and Maruti (cars) in the clear lead.

    > Scooters continue to make a comeback.

    > 55% of potential scooter buyers are first-time shoppers (compared to 26% for bikes), thereby implying strong growth prospects for the segment. In fact, the change in preference is already reflecting as scooter market share has risen from 15% in FY09 to 28% in FY15.

    > In terms of brands, Honda reigns supreme with a thumbs-up from consumers across income strata, while Bajaj Auto is a clear laggard with no presence in the segment.

    News Topic Re-opened.

I would like to give a few pointers:-

    1. I don't believe the quoted Rs. 400/ month saving on using personal vehicle.
Every person's commute distance, traffic conditions and available public commuting options are different. For example, a person near a Metro station may save more, from not owning a vehicle at all.

Still, assuming other factors to be constant:- Instead of spending Rs. 80,000 on a motorcycle, one can invest into bank and get approx. Rs. 7500 as interest per year, which is more than the Rs. 4800 saved on the motorcycle. Plus, we save on maintenance and servicing costs, including taking the time off to get vehicles serviced.
So, are Indians confused that they're saving money by using motorcycles instead of public transport?

    2. 65% women prefer scooters. But, the rest of the 35% prefer what? Cars we guess? It must be mentioned.

    3. And Bajaj does need a Scooter after all... We all know that. The question is, what kind of scooter will actually work for Bajaj.

I didn't see a clear shortcoming with Krystal, or the unreleased Blade (with whatever info we had), so what will make the market tick?

Bikes are cheaper than public transport. Atleast in Bangalore. Per km on my P220 costs me 60p, public transport costs me Rs.3. Including maintenance, it still cheaper than public transport. Also interest on saving 80k would be around 5k after tax.
      Regardless, Life shall go on.

My office is only 11 km.s away. For which, I need to shell up around Rs. 35-40(both ways). Wherein, its between 30-35 if I use my bike. Also saves me around 1.5 hr.s of time and exhaustion. For me at least, bike is economical. But as Samarth sir has mentioned, it depends on the location you are in.
But, Yellowspunk, I'm not sure how can a P220 cost you 60p per km! Even if average petrol price is 70 per liter and your bike returns you a FE of 40, it should be Rs. 1.75/km only for the petrol if you don't take into consideration maintenance and servicing.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

How many people live near a Metro station? and how many cities in India have Metro anyways?

With your personal vehicle, you have the choice of moving around at your will and timings. This gets better if your personal vehicle is a two-wheeler coz they are quicker and economical than a 4 wheeler and defintely comfortable than existing public transport. Having an FD of 80,000 in bank won't save you from the phyical and mental exertion of public commuting. I am not against public transport but I won't travel in public, smelling someone's fart every morning in metro or a bus.

It must be a private car or public transport I am guessing.

The summary of the report reflects how important and inseperable two-wheelers have become for Indian families and for daily lifestyle. So for now, 100cc-125ccc bike s/scooter segment will continue to grow and is here to stay.
