Mumbai will soon be able to hire Motorcycle Cabs leaving behind the chaotic traffic as the transport authorities are planning to introduce motorcycle taxis soon in Maharashtra.

The State transport commissioner have sent a draft plan to the state government for consideration. If the proposal is cleared, Maharashtra will be the second state after Goa to introduce such cabs.

Several countries like Brazil, Indonesia, Vietnam and China have such taxis as a popular mode of public transport. Much like in Goa, passengers will have to ride pillion. But unlike Goa, motorcycle cabs in the city will have fare meters.

    Transport department official said:
“The state government wanted to introduce black-and-yellow bikes like taxis and auto rickshaws. These bikes will have a fare meter too and they have already prepared rules keeping all the safety aspects in mind".
    Another official said:
"Much like the bikes used to deliver pizzas, these motorcycle cabs will be registered under the transport category. Bikes with an engine capacity between 100 and 350 cc can be registered as motorcycle taxis. This way, citizens will get a choice to choose from a normal city bike to a powerful bullet."
The bike riders will have to sport badges issued by the RTO office like the one given to cabbies and auto drivers, besides a permanent two-wheeler licence. For safety, riders will have to provide helmets to pillion. Other safety measures such as the provision of a sari-guard, crash-guard on the front, a proper break and side lights have also been mentioned in the proposal. Also the permits will be issued for motorcycle cabs like other Auto rickshaws and taxis.

The state transport department is, however, tightlipped about the proposal with transport secretary Gautam Chatterjee saying the
“introduction of such a service does not fit in the existing rules.’’

    Approved!

A good initiative in their perspective, but just-another-cabbie-to-be-careful-of for the normal commuter.
Ideally, we should be "reducing" the number of vehicles on road, no idea how this initiative helps.

I hope they comply with the safety norms for themselves and the passenger as well. They should also be in position to force the passenger to comply with the safety norms and guidelines.

We dont want accidents happening, or these people driving on foot-path to cut across the traffic.

Reducing the number of vehicles on the road, I think, is a difficult proposition, specially with the increasing population... And let's not even get into the family planning methods, which by the way, are only reducing the rate by which population is growing, but the population itself is not reducing.

This initiative does reduce the space occupied on the road, which by itself is a contribution. Speed of the traffic is increased this way. In nominal amounts, it helps in fuel preservation too.

Now, the single person who has to hire a taxi, has a faster and better alternative, so I think its a noble initiative...

However, the concept of Motorcycle taxi reminds me of a somewhat ugly mod job... Yeah, The 5 (or 6?) seater Bullet-500 (or 350) from Golmaal movie series. And guess what, its Yellow too, so someone in MH will get the idea. Ultimately, these Taxis will be private, right?
Because not only are mod jobs not that reliable for long term, but we would also want to have a good image in front of tourists, as a country, because something like the below shown bike is not attractive to my eyes at least:-

Many are afraid to sit pillion,it wont be comfortable for many
Why cant they just improve the ride quality of bus instead of bringing in such ideas.
When the Govt can ban beef they can surely impose a law saying one person one car, There are many who have multiple vehicles all catering to different needs makes no sense to me at all.

Reducing the number of vehicles is not as difficult as it is made out to be. Singapore is a very apt example. We only need a government gutsy enough to stress on public transport and take apt measures to curb private vehicles and fight lobbies simultaneously . Whether we feel good or bad, if the country's future is better with the approach, it must be implemented.

But alas, we only believe in doing all sorts of nautanki. Who knows, tomorrow a cycle waala might come and say that its better than bikes as it occupies lesser space.

In the hindsight, cycles would do good business on rental schemes for short city hops.

The part in bold, sadly, is not going to happen in this country. I fully empathize with your idea, but I'm being practical.

Call it democracy or our bad luck or whatever, but no government is gutsy enough for this. They risk their vote bank on every decision. Will you leave your personal bike (or car) for such an initiative, being a biker? Will Indian people do? Won't they rather change such a government?

              Going OT:
Because if government had guts, even overpopulation could've been controlled by implementing a 1-2 child rule, like in China.

And do you how many problems can be controlled (to little or a big extent) just by controlling population? I can write a book on them:-
Inflation, accidents, other deaths, unemployment, living standard, resource crunch, poverty, illiteracy, hunger, slums, hygiene, homeless people, Population's dependence ratio, pollution, urban rush & traffic jams, environment problems, individual respect, women health, man's health, domestic frustration/ violence, mob (in)justice, religion dominance schemes (schemes by political leaders to make any one particular religion/ caste dominant by encouraging more children), smaller size of government organisations and lesser bureaucracy/ corruption, etc, etc.... and etc.
The list just doesn't end on this...

The benefits would be better city/ state administration and governance, better family health, more purchasing power in the economy, happiness & well being, etc. Less children would mean more individual attention and better character development in children (which might result in lesser crimes, road rage, murders and rapes too, overall)....

A parent of 7 children usually doesn't devote individual time to their children. (S) He'll be more busy in just arranging food for them.

Right now, our country is like a 1000 horsepower () engine, but a railway one (), which has to drag a lot of weight with it. How will we keep up with the world?
We're capable, but we need to shed weight!

If I ever become a PM of this country, this will be the first thing I'll implement... This is one bullet, which will kill many of our problems for the long term. Something we call as, "Ram- Baan" (Lord Ram's arrow).
No need to leave your bike or car, just make less babies. Use them balloons (C.....s) or swallow tablet or whatever, just consult your doctor...

Practically, it can't be implemented in one big step.
One has to go step by step, (like introducing fines for having more than 6 children initially, so that not many citizens oppose this move, and then slowly reducing the amount to 5, 4 and finally 2 or 1 child. Later fines can be made more strict or imprisonment can be added).

But again, it requires guts. Something our government won't ever have, no matter which it is. Because its Democracy & we're (hic!) proud of it, isn't it?

This is hair-raising scary for me! I dread the thought of 50+ motorbike taxi on road driving the way the existing autowallas do. The reason autos drive so rash is because they are more flickable than cars/cabs. Then to think about bikes driven by these people... This is more scarier than the time I watched Exorcist at age of 10...

OT, yesterday was auto-rickshaw strike in Mumbai and I had the ride of my life to office. So peaceful... so serene... I know it is highly selfish and daily commuters suffered a lot but I could not help but wish for more such strikes.

I was discussing this with a team-mate yesterday that the huge population can also be a reason behind the dumba** attitude of people for road safety. It is all about basic economics of demand-supply. Any commodity with high supply/low demand will have lesser value. Since we are the biggest baby producing factory in the world, supply of life is very high and hence value of life is quite low here. How often have you thought "People dont value life here"? The reasoning may sound crazy but holds some merit.

Dont know how much this going to work, most of the people fear sitting as pillion and on top of that safety is the major part while you are riding a Bike with pillion, as we know how these rules are going through in taxis.

One more reason these may not be successful: The bike "cab" drivers are supposed to carry pillion helmets and pillions are supposed to wear it. But I can NEVER wear somebody else's helmet. That's super gross stuff! In humid climates like Mumbai and Chennai, I doubt anybody would do that. I am getting nausea even thinking about those sweaty and smelly helmets with possible ticks/lice. Eeeeewwwwww... No thanks mate, I would rather call a cab/auto.

xBhp has got inside information from confidential sources that this plan has been scrapped.

Bombay will not have motorcycle or four wheeler cabs. It will all be replaced with inflatable rafts, as that is the fastest way to get around the city. The western and eastern express rivers will have special lanes for community rowed rafts, to ease congestion during peak hours.

This is following last year's successful trial run with the city metro where shower facilities were provided to commuters who were stinking of sweat.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

OT, yesterday I took the Eastern Express "river" to go home in the rainfall and it was orgasmic!
