  • Ludhiana Police let traffic offenders buy helmet instead of paying a fine!

The traffic police of Ludhiana have come up with a novel method to check helmetless riding. They are now giving people the option of buying a helmet on the spot rather than paying the fine. Hopefully the people buying the helmet would use it on their future rides as well.

In a unique drive to encourage people to wear helmets and drive safely, traffic police in Ludhiana are offering people an option to buy helmets on the spot as an alternative to fines. The drive, saw traffic police officials stopping two-wheeler drivers not wearing a helmet and let them choose between a fine of rupees 300 or a helmet. Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP-Traffic), Ludhiana, Richa Agnihotri, said this initiative has been undertaken by the police after they were approached by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) for the same. Several riders chose to avoid the fine and instead bought helmets. Residents also acknowledged the importance of wearing helmets. The traffic police hope to continue this drive in the coming days and sensitize riders, especially youngsters towards following traffic safety rules.

A very novel idea indeed but 300 rupees as fine are safer IMO, instead of a crappy helmet (in lieu of 300 rupees).
Let's assume the offender pledges to wear the 300 rupees waala helmet always and some day meets with an accident.

Will the bucket ("itne paise me itna hi milega" logic) save his face at all? No, in all probability. Will the people still want to wear helmets?

I'd say, the idea is good. Increase the fines for helmet less riding to 1500 rupees and if caught, at least give them Studds/SteelBird helmets costing up to 1000-1200 and use the rest for revenue generation. In order to curb corruption in the form of giving non standard helmets, the police can have a tie up with a helmet distributor to ensure genuine helmets are handed out.
    Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

Er. You jumped the gun sirjee. The traffic fine is 300, there is no mention of the helmet being for 300!!!

If you check the video in the link they are selling Studds helmets.

This idea is really catching on. First TN, and now Ludhiana. I'd say they should make this rule a standard across India. This is an interesting twist though.
While the TN rules indicated that the vehicle be impounded till a purchase receipt is produced at the police station, Ludhiana's rules are actually more people-friendly while at the same time ensuring helmet compliance. And what I like best about the approach - either ways the cops dont get away with your cash in their pockets. So effectively, it helps in cutting down on corruption too.

AFAIK, maximum helmetless riders do own adecent helmet (and 99 out of 100 times, that helmet is purchased along with the vehicle itself!) However, it's just that they never bother to wear it. A cheap helmet, though may not be effective in a high-speed crash, will provide at least some protection instead of having nothing on the head at all. Who knows - the morons might just pull out their decade-old helmets to avoid the hassle of buying yet another one!

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

Ah, videos are blocked in office - I could only read the textual portion. If that is the case; then very nice. This can be picked up by other states as well.

Really..In TN ?? I never seen any police-wala doing it nor I heard from here in Chennai. I dont want to use any offensive language here. But, these guys needs some serious a** - spanking to get their brains straight to do the job. Still so many loitering in city without a helmet.

Hell, I even asked a police guy who didnt wear one while standing in a signal. He just laughed and rode away.

Actually the problem with increasing fine will be that it could result in increase in curruption. If the fine is Rs 1000, an offender will have higher motivation to pay a bribe of Rs 200 to the police and "save" Rs 800.

No safety rule can be implemented unless awareness comes from the riders and pillions themselves.
