    Sales Report: August 2015.

Last month was a shocking month for Hero Motocorp, as it remained the only well known manufacturer to report negative sales, compared to sales of the same month last year. Is this trend set to continue? Sadly so. Their stock values are creating havoc among investors. Their market share is a shocking 12 year low, according to a analysis, which Hero have doubted technically. They're also in news for high royalties to Honda, which they aim to curb by newer independent motorcycle and scooter models. They're also getting incomplete projects with EBR to India, to continue product development.
In 2014, the news was a 21% increase compared to 2013. This year, the news is 14% decline.

But they're still the No. 1 in sales, so hopefully we won't see the king being dethroned any time soon.
This time's festive season being late than usual is being cited as the reason for low sales, but... this applies to all automobile makers?

TVS are clearly stagnating this month, with a marginal growth. Let's see what festive season brings for them.
Bajaj also posted a marginal growth, despite newer models to flaunt in showrooms.

The Gixxer and Let's are some of the products responsible for taking Suzuki to an amazing 68% growth this month. They have finally realized that good looking bikes sell in this country, although let's make it clear that there was nothing wrong with GS150R all these years.

Royal Enfield breaks the 40,000 units/ month barrier for the first time in India, with an impressive 59% sales growth rate, but unlike last month, this time the biggest growth figure is not posted by RE. This is something, that Suzuki will enjoy, at least for this month.

Anyways, here are the regular excel created charts:->

      Re: Sales Report: August 2015.

It is time that Hero paid for the sticker job upon sticker job they inflicted on us for years. Even a new bike was always the same engine with even more weight added. Unfortunately Honda which is copying its erstwhile partner, will have a similar fate.
Hats off to RE who are making noncommuters mass market. A lot expected from TVS soon when its new flagship comes on board. Feeling a bit letdown by Yamaha for not reclaiming its long lost affordable performance crown. Bajaj maybe the most proactive manufacturer doesn't have as much to show for its efforts but still going great.

Its clear that Hero lost almost 1/9th of its market share over 1 year.

In this interview 2 months back, Rajiv Bajaj knew this all along:- This will be our best quarter ever: Rajiv Bajaj - Rediff.com Business

A small extract is given below:-
Q: If you are gaining market share, who's losing?

A: I think it will be Hero, because they have the largest share. With the CT100 and Platina, we are recording 80,000-90,000 units a month.
Hero has the HF Dawn and HF Deluxe, for which sales stand at 90,000-100,000.
Now, both (Hero and Bajaj) are almost equal.
I think Hero needs new and performing products. There have hardly been any ground breaking launches after Impulse. The existing products are a mixed bag of considerable and avoidable products.

I just read a test of the new Xtreme Sports... Its weight is heavy and this affects its performance. The team couldn't even get a 0-60 in a clear 5.5 seconds & a top speed above 110 kmph. Its weight is 147 kgs. Compare this to:- RTR 180 (137 kgs), Discover 150 (130 kgs), Pulsar AS 150 (143 kgs) and Pulsar 180 (147 kgs). Don't even bring the Dukes into the equation.
Someone who takes a test ride of Xtreme, Gixxer, RTR160 and Pulsar 180, which do you think he will go for, at least by performance?

In my opinion, they firstly need to plonk the Karizma engine inside the Impulse setup, if possible the CRF 230 engine, with a proper 6 speed gearbox. This product should be used to hold competition events around the country so that publicity happens and people get hooked up. No use sponsoring cricket and hockey when that's not related to your business at all.
Then, a lightweight (if possible, Fuel injected) 100cc with off roading theme should be launched but with different looks than Impulse, whose focus would be on bad roads and good mileage figures.
If we can have a Hero Classic, then why not this which is more practical and actually offers something more than a rugged passion and a Cafe Racer wannabe?

They can do these 2 moves with their existing engines and stuff.
Unless, of course, they have something really cool hidden with EBR..... which is exactly the case, I suspect.

A small extract is given below:-

Does Bajaj sustain the initial sales over extended period, especially when its not a Pulsar? The 50K additional CTs will be on decline after the initial honeymoon period as seen countless earlier times with Boxer, Caliber, CT 100, XCD, Discover 100 (first ever), Boxer BM150, and now CT again? Another question is how long will Bajaj keep the CT in market?

Coming to Hero, I think they will critically depend on the success of their all new bikes, if and when they appear. Think that Honda is also waiting for the same. While Honda can most likely match a Hero success, it will be all way down for Hero to fail. If Hero does not introduce new bikes, it will be more a matter of "when" Honda overtakes them than "if".
            Bajaj Boxer : 2002-09
            Suzuki Samurai: 2003-04 (Used)
            Bajaj XCD: 2009-10
            Bajaj Caliber: 2010- (Used)
            Kinetic Luna: 2015- (Used)

Bajaj's strategy of changing bike models has not changed yet. So, what's so surprising exactly?

Rajiv Bajaj's thoughts regarding Platina were that it will be produced till it sells, no extra than that. Discover was their focus brand, and it is even today.
So, maybe CT100 will meet a similar fate? Getting produced till it sells, and then off, we guess?
Its hard to tell exactly, but I can't imagine Bajaj trying tooth and nail to save CT100, for some reason. Discover is their flagship commuter, and a fine one, I might add.

Bajaj's marketing overall is not perfect, even if its good. There're too many editions of each motorcycle, and parts differ so drastically, that even vendors or company mechanics get confused as to what to fit in the bike. Plus, its even confusing when one goes to purchase a bike. Recently, I was on a UP trip, and a salesman recommended my dad the 4 valve 5 geared Discover 125. My dad rides like a turtle walks, slow and mostly within the city.
The salesman must have suggested 125M, which has 2 valves for low end torque and 4 gears instead. But, the salesman was probably clueless.

However, the bigger worry is:- TVS' marginal growth can be easily explained by lack of enough new products, barely a Jupiter or a refreshed TVS Star during this period. And they will be back, with BMW in the future....
How do you explain Bajaj's stagnancy? They have had enough new products in most segments this year. And yet... their growth scares with a under 5% figures.

They will introduce new bikes. Actually, EBR's bankruptcy couldn't have happened at a worse time, just after Hero's investment in it.
I think they will retain their No. 1 position, its just a matter of time when they come with new bikes.
I perceive that EBR's projects didn't just include paper exotics, but also tech-equipped commuters... Atleast there was some mention of technology for masses.
