  • Most Affordable Ducati ever : Ducati Scrambler 400?

Ducati is apparently working on the younger sibling of the Scrambler range of motorcycles and the new motorcycle will have a 400cc engine.
A report from the tmcblog.com indicates the new Scrambler will possess a design similar to its elder sibling and engine will be the 400cc L- twin Testatreta, which is also a downsized unit of 800cc Scrambler. The smaller Ducati Scrambler will get its chassis from the current one and will be lighter.

The motorcyle is expected to be unveiled at the 73rd Worldwide Motorcycle Exhibition 2015 (EICMA) in Italy in November. Ducati also confirmed a world premiere at EICMA on 16 November, which is likely to be the 400cc Scrambler. Additionally, Ducati will showcase an array of new motorcycles at the EICMA, topped with the recently unveiled 160hp, Monster 1200 R that is the most powerful Ducati naked motorcycle till date.

There was a time not too long ago when the Euro manufacturers openly declared that they have no interest in going below the 600cc market otherwise called the mass market production because it would dilute their niche brand image. Fast forward a decade, and seeing as to how other manufacturers have all moved base to Asia they suddenly seem to have come out of their "We cater to rich middle aged people" image and are all gunning for the 300-500 market. How the tides have turned!

Ducati did infact have a 400cc Monster a few years ago dubbed the M400 for the Asian markets. It was based on the M600 heavily. Also whatever happened to the 696 they imported for R&D last year. Would it not make sense to have another Monster sitting at the entry level price tag?

Might be a good news for Europe/America but not for India. Even it's hard to find dealer/service networks there for Ducati / Aprilia, forget about India.

But lets hope for the best, we might see some Red Italian beauty on our Indian roads.

The Scrambler in the image gets a conventional front fork and circular mirrors. Besides, these differences, the Ducati Scrambler 400 looks like its elder sibling. The alloy wheels and grippy Pirellis are borrowed from the 803cc Scrambler too. That’s a good thing and contrary to perception, the block tread tyres offer great confidence on tarmac too. The exhaust unit on the prototype looks like an aftermarket job and we expect the final production unit to sport a better finish.

Why is it called sixty2? Are they trying to take the path of Harley? Doesn't sound sexy too.. Does anyone know about the nomenclature behind this?

Even if it makes to India only people I pune or Mumbai can enjoy them. Im always really jealous of riders around pune. They get the best of everything in the motoring world.

The name sixty2 comes from the year 1962 when first scrambler was originally launched in the US and became very popular among the youths of that time. With the name sixty2 Ducati wants to recreate that magic of 1962 with this scrambler.

The tank cap of the Scrambler also has 1962 inscribed on it :

Wow another ~400!! BMW realised it to claim the position bak from KTM and made an awesome G310; and now its Ducati! If you're so much concerned about diluting the brand you could end up bankrupt under the current sub 400 market explosion scenario
Ducati marketing it as a lifestyle product with downsized 800 scrambler with air-oil cooled, 2 valve retro; ok its character full, different and more importantly a twin; but still not that appealing against the tech laden competition (their high-mid sized monsters aren't just air cooled anymore!, anyway that under the crotch cylinder is not going to b comfortable!)
Still it adds to the variety and could farewell in EU and American markets especially and bring in more customers to taste the brand.

Re: Most Affordable Ducati ever : Ducati Scrambler 400?

I don't understand why people are surprised. No matter how niche company it is, they have to have a lower range, to support the flagships, atleast in India if not anywhere else.

No pyramid top exists without stone blocks at a lower level.
To make its top most rock (flagship) shine high and stably so, they must need higher number of lower blocks (mass market products).

And now, we just heard news of a single cylinder BMW, so we know the direction we're going in.
Something in my heart tells me that, this Scrambler will be more expensive than the BMW's offering, so maybe we're complaining in the wrong thread... don't you guys think so?

PS: A deviation that Ducati could've taken from this decision, could've been a sub-brand under Ducati, like Buell was for HD, and Lamborghini is for Audi/Volkswagen, except that this sub brand under Ducati could've been mass market.

But, how could they have had a junior Scrambler under totally another brand, when Senior Scrambler is under Ducati? That wouldn't happen, right?
