  • WSBK 2016 Season: Updates!

The 2016 WSBK season is to start in a couple of days and here we are to refresh you with some Superbike gyaan! We will be covering the WSBK races at Phillip Island, Australia, where the season opener has traditionally been held. So here goes...

World Superbike is World Championship for production motorcycles. Manufacturers race the bikes which they sell in the showrooms. At least on the face of it! Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday has been the age old adage for this production series.

Production motorcycle racing has been going on for many decades around the world. But its popularity caught on mostly in Australia and USA only in the 1970s. Bikes were usually large capacity 4 strokes, with Kawasaki, BMW, Moto Guzzi and Ducati battling it out. But with the advent of the 2 stroke GP bikes, these races took a backseat. In the latter half of the 1970s, American Motorcyclist Association once again set up the production motorcycle races, and the Japanese manufacturers were giving the Europeans a run for their money. The stage was set and these races started gaining popularity steadily.

Motorcycle racing has always given more importance to the riders than to the manufacturers. Extremely talented young men, putting their lives at risk to be the better racer, make for a wonderful spectacle. And the rivalry was fierce. The Japanese manufacturers continued to rule the roost and these races started getting popular in the European continent as well with the addition of European riders.

Besides the litre class Superbikes which race, the support series for WSBK is comprised of World Supersport (WSS), where 600cc Supersports compete and the two Superstock series. WSS started in 1990 as a support series, but became a world championship only in 1999.

    WSBK & MotoGP

While MotoGP is a series where prototype motorcycles are raced, WSBK is a series for production bikes. The production bikes might look similar to the bikes in the showroom near you on the outside, but are very different within.

MotoGP uses Michelin tyres, while WSBK on the other hand uses Pirellis. With the simpler electronics and tyres which go off easily, tyre management becomes an art in WSBK. Coupled to this, WSBK uses qualifying tyres, which ensures that the race is always a topsy-turvy event with fast qualifiers being overtaken by fast tyre managers! Often one sees the top fifteen riders separated by just a second in qualifying in WSBK.

    WSBK Calendar

    xBhp at Phillip Island

xBhp will be covering the Phillip Island Round in Australia. The Phillip Island circuit has always been something special with most riders. From the rider who comes first to the rider who finishes last, every single one will sing praises of this track. The layout of the track is such that it tests the rider more than the bike. Both in WSBK and MotoGP (which also races at PI), the bravest, most skilled riders are rewarded with good results, even when the machinery being used is not the best on the grid.

    The Top Riders of WSBK

WSBK 2016 will see 24 riders line up on the grid, except wildcards. These are the riders that you need to keep an eye on in 2016!

Jonathan Rea, Kawasaki Racing Team, Kawasaki ZX-10R: He is the 2015 WSBK Champion and wil be racing with the Number 1 on his bike. He has the title to defend and has already gotten off to a good start in the pre-season testing.

    Tom Sykes
, Kawasaki Racing Team, Kawasaki ZX-10R: Teammate to Rea, he will probably be mounting the toughest challenge for the title. It will be a battle between teammates and one worth watching, as the sparks have already started flying without a wheel being turned yet!

    Chaz Davies
, Aruba.it Racing Ducati, Ducati Panigale R: Chaz was runner-up in the 2015 season and will be hoping to improve his final position by just one place! Even though he had a strong showing in the latter half of 2015, it will be a big challenge to take on the might of the two Kawasakis

    Davide Giugliano
, Aruba.it Racing Ducati, Ducati Panigale R: Teammate to Davies, he had an injury filled 2015. No one has ever doubted his speed, but what he has lacked is in consistency. He will be hoping to improve on that and have an injury free season.

    Nicky Hayden

    Michael van der Mark
, Honda World Superbike Team, Honda CBR 1000RR SP: The Flying Dutchman! He showed his speed in World Supersport by taking the Championship and had a strong rookie season last year, outriding his teammate and then WSBK Champion Guintoli. This is his second year in WSBK and he will have a chance to shine, with only machinery holding him back.

    Sylvain Guintoli
, Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team, Yamaha YZF-R1: This is the return of Yamaha to the WSBK paddock with the new R1. The bike has looked very promising in testing and big things are expected off the Frenchman and 2014 WSBK Champion.

    Alex Lowes

    Josh Brookes
, Milwaukee BMW, BMW S1000RR: Reigning British Superbike Champion has known to be fast on a bike and a straight shooter off it. Brookes should be up to speed in WSBK soon enough and add a lot of colour to the paddock!

    Karel Abraham
, Milwaukee BMW, BMW S1000RR: Abraham is another mover from MotoGP to WSBK this season and will have a tough time adapting to the new series. He missed out a lot of last season due to serious injury and will take a bit of time before he starts challenging for top five positions.

    Leon Camier
, MV Agusta Reparto Corse, MV Agusta F4: The Italian manufacturer has to develop their F4 to be able to compete in WSBK successfully. And Camier is the perfect man to do the job. He will put in his 100% to make the bike competitive and take on the might of the larger manufacturers.

    Alex de Angelis
, IodaRacing Team, Aprilia RSV4 RF: Angelis is the third rider from MotoGP who has shifted to WSBK this year. Though he has moved along with his team. Ioda Racing will also be racing in WSBK for the first time in 2016 and it will be a big challenge for both team and rider to compete. Alex had a horrific crash in Japan last year, one of the worst imaginable for a rider. Yet he is today up and ready to race!

So these are the guys to watch out for in the 2016 season of WSBK. We also got a chance to speak with Nicky Hayden before the start of the season. Here is our conversation with him.

xBhp will be there to cover the 1st race at Philip Island with a very special motorcycle that we will ride from Phillip Island to Sydney! Stay Tuned!

Ducati Motor pulled off the wraps from the Ducati Panigale R which is to be raced in World Superbike by Chaz Davies and Davide Giugliano.

The team is named the Aruba.it Racing - Ducati Team and runs the Panigale with the main sponsor being Aruba.it Last season saw the Panigale finally taking a win in the hands of Chaz Davies and also second place in the championship. For 2016, Ducati wants to improve on their results, which means they need to win the championship. That is easier said than done, with Kawasaki Racing bringing in good motorcycle with two strong and hungry riders, Jonathan Rea and Tom Sykes.

Testing has shown that the Kawasakis, like last year, are still the bike to beat. But Ducati hope to raise their game to win races and eventually the Championship in 2016.

      said:
      added rider Chaz Davies.

      Teammate Giugliano shared the optimism:
Claudio Domenicali, the CEO of Ducati Motor Holding, further added:

said Stefano Cecconi, CEO of Aruba S.p.A and the Team Principal.
The World Superbike season starts shortly at Phillip Island, Australia in a couple of weeks. With pre-season testing held there a few days before the official races. This year a new format will be in place for the races, with the first WSBK race on Saturday, while the second will be held on Sunday along with the World Supersport race.

          Re: WSBK 2016 Season: Updates!

The WSBK season is to start later this week at Phillip Island Australia. The first day of testing was held today at the track.

Tom Sykes ended the two session day fastest on his Kawasaki, with his teammate Jonathan Rea the only guy able to set a time close to that of Sykes. Dutchman Michael Van Der Mark ended the day third fastest having set his fast time in the morning session. The BMW of Jordi Torres ended in 4th while VDM's teammate Nicky Hayden rounded out the top 5. The Yamaha R1 in its first season took 6th and 7th with Sylvain Guintoli and Alex Lowes. The Ducatis of Xavi Forres, Chaz Davies and Davide Giugliano rounded out the top ten. The top ten were covered by 7 tenths of a second.

Crashers included Chaz Davies on the Ducati and teammates Karel Abraham and Brookes on the BMW. Alex de Angelis also crashed out on his Aprilia in the morning session. Weather consistently stayed inconsistent at PI and disrupted both World Superbike and World Supersport.

WSS had the usual suspects at the front with Randy Krummenacher leading the pack followed by teammate Kenan Sofuoglu. Jules Cluzel, PJ Jacobsen and Lorenzo Zanetti rounded out the top five.

2016 WSBK: Phillip Island Friday Practice Results and Summary

Finally the racing season is underway with the tyres going a full circle at Phillip Island, Australia for the first time in Free Practice 1 & 2 on Friday.

Tom Sykes topped the first session with a late charge at the end of the session on his Kawasaki ZX-10R. While Frenchman Sylvain Guintoli who led much of the session was relegated to 2nd, less that a hundredth of a second behind. Jonathan Rea followed a thousandth of a second behind in 3rd place. The Yamaha R1 of Guintoli showing promise in the first session of the first race weekend of the season, an indicator of what is to come in 2016.

Rain interrupted the session, but the short burst of rainfall didn't hamper anyone considerably. Camier, Davies, Hayden, Reiterberger, Van Der Mark, Giugliano and Lowes rounded out the top ten. It was a pleasant surprise to see strong performances from Camier on the MV Agusta, and Hayden and Reiterberger in their first year of WSBK.

Just to prove how close the racing is in WSBK, the top ten guys were within four tenths of a second of the fastest time!

Free Practice 2 saw the order changing up a bit, with Guintoli going from Mr. Consistent to the Flying Frenchman on his Yamaha! The Dutchman van der Mark went second quickest, 3 tenths of the pace of Sylvain. The two Kawasakis of Rea and Sykes followed with another strong lap by Camier on the MV Agusta. Hayden, Guigliano, Davies, Savadori and Lowes rounded out the top ten, who were within a second of the fastest time.

The 10 fastest guys from the combined times of FP1 and FP2 will go straight to Superpole 2, while the rest have another shot in Superpole 1. The two fastest guys from Superpole 1 will step up to SP2 and accordingly the race grid will be finalized.

2016 WSBK Phillip Island Superpole and Race 1 Result and Summary

The 2016 WSBK Season got off to a fantastic start with an intriguing Superpole session and an excellent hard fought race.

                Superpole 1 & 2

Superpole 1 saw the Yamaha of Alex Lowes and the BMW of Jordi Torres finishing fastest and bumping themselves up into Superpole 2.The first half of Superpole 2 saw a quick lap from Ducati man Davide Giugliano find a place at the top, with Sylvain Guintoli and Alex Lowes behind. At the halfway mark as has now become a tradition, everyone pitted in for qualifying rubber before they headed out for the one quick make or break lap.

After much jostling of position, Tom Sykes took pole on the qualifying rubber, followed by Giugliano and Rea. The two Yamahas of Guintoli and Lowes took 4th and 5th, which were followed in turn by the two Hondas of Michael van der Mark and Nicky Hayden. Reigning Superstock 1000 Champion Savadori took 8th behind Hayden, while Chaz Davies and Leon Camier rounded out the top ten. Reiterberger and Torres took their BMWs to the last spots available in the Superpole 2.

                Race 1

This was the first time in WSBK history that a race was going to be held on a Saturday afternoon. With the new format of racing being introduced this year, many a fans might have missed tuning in to watch this race. Well you guys missed an awesome spectacle of close quarter racing, where there was no love lost between multiple teammates!

The 22 lap race started with Jonathan Rea taking the lead with Tom Sykes on his rear wheel, the Kawasakis muscling the Ducati of Guigliano out of the way. Chaz Davies from 9th and Michael van der Mark from 6th both got good starts as they worked they way through the field to the front. The initial laps saw a pack of 9 riders within striking distance of each other, until Lorenzo Savadori had to drop off as he couldn't maintain the pace at the front. Everyone at the front was riding cautiously as in WSBK the Pirellis drop off towards the end and managing the tyres is of paramount importance.

Rea led for the first three laps of the race till Sykes took him on the brakes, Davies followed through, but Rea fought back his position from the Ducati. Giugliano made a hard pass on his teammate forcing him to stand his bike up as he went through, but Davies returned the favour on the next lap, allowing the Honda of van der Mark through as well. Hayden followed behind biding his time as he rode cautiously in the initial laps. While the Yamahas of Alex Lowes and Sylvain Guintoli hung onto the group. By the halfway mark of the race, the top 8 were still bunched together. And as expected by Lap 15, tyres started dropping for some, while those more consistent stayed at the front.

Davies was running a longer swingarm to try reducing tyre degradation, while Rea was the only one to have done a 22 lap race simulation, van der Mark had done a 17 lap race simulation and the tactics of these three paid off. The group of 8 started shrinking, with Hayden suffering from tyre issues and Alex Lowes crashing out. Sykes was unable to match the pace at the front and had to ride hard to keep off the charging Yamaha of Guintoli. Giugliano put in the fastest lap of the race at the very last lap to grab the final place on the podium, but the Honda of van der Mark held on. Davies made a last lap dive under Rea. Rea allowed him through, and held the racing line while Davies went wide losing drive down towards the last corner. Davies had one last chance of slipstreaming Rea down the main straight, but the Ducati didn't have the power to match of the Kawasaki on the straights.

Rea won the race with Davies 0.063 seconds behind, van der Mark took the final place on the podium. It was good to see three different nationalities and manufacturers on the podium. Northern Ireland, Wales and Holland. Kawasaki, Ducati and Honda. A welcome change from the dominance of the Spanish and Italians as we see in MotoGP, with all races being won by either Yamaha or Honda. All the riders have a chance to go through their data and sleep over it and try again afresh tomorrow in Race 2. This Saturday race does add a bit of spice to the entire proceedings! Results for Race 1 below:

The World Supersport Race will be live at 0800hrs and the WSBK Race 2 will be live at 0930hrs.

2016 WSBK Phillip Island Race 2 Results and Summary

WSBK Race 2 got off to a great start under a bright sun and no fear of rain.

Pole position holder Tom Sykes, got the hole-shot and headed into the first corner leading the race. Jonathan Rea and Davide Giugliano followed close behind as the rest of the pack was nipping at their heels. Michael Van Der Mark soon passed the Italian for third spot, with Chaz Davies once again making a brilliant start from 9th place. Alex Lowes on the Yamaha was followed by Nicky Hayden.

Lowes had a moment and went off track, while Hayden had a gap to make up to the front. The Kentucky Kid did and dragged Sylvain Guintoli on the other Yamaha along with him. As things settled at the front, the American made a move on the inside of Giugliano at T1, but the Italian fought back immediately and took back the spot. Hayden made another attempt, but the Italian once again held firm with a hard but fair move.

Sykes was leading a race which looked like a procession for a considerable time, till he made a mistake into braking for T4 on lap 12, overshooting the corner allowing Rea, Davies, and Van Der Mark to come through without a problem. The Dutchman then pushed to the front of the group to lead the race, but as was evident from the pace being set by the Kawasakis before and after, he was about a second slower. This allowed Hayden and Guintoli to once again close in on the leading group after having lost touch.

The ever aggressive Italian made out braked himself and clipped the rear wheel of Sykes, throwing them both off the racing line and allowing both Hayden and Guintoli through. Hayden then set about closing the gap to the leading trio as his teammate was holding up the group at the front. Rea made attempts along the Gardner Straight to slipstream past the Honda, but was unsuccessful for 3 laps before he made it stick on the 4th attempt, dragging Davies on the Ducati along with him.

Chaz Davies remembered Race 1 and didn't wait for the last lap to make a move. Instead on the penultimate lap, Davies pushed Rea wide at T4 to take the lead and stretch out a gap. But the gap wasn't big enough as Rea blasted past him down the main straight. The Welshman didn't want to suffer a case of Deja Vu and made a last lap attempt on the brakes. Unfortunately he couldn't hold on and slipped off the track with his Ducati. That allowed Rea enough room to comfortably cross the line in first place to take his second win of the season and the first double win of the year!

WSBK Champion Jonathan Rea laid down the gauntlet by convincingly winning the Phillip Island rounds, while title challenger Chaz Davies managed to rejoin and finish the race in 10th place. Michael Van Der Mark took second spot for Honda and it looked like a double podium for Honda, but Davide Giugliano pipped Nicky Hayden to the line with a daring pass characteristic of the Italian in the penultimate corner. Guintoli took 5th place for Yamaha in their debut round, while early laps leader Sykes finished the race in 6th, 3.320 seconds behind his teammate and race winner. Behind them the battle of the BMWs which continued throughout the race was won by Jordi Torres, followed by Markus Reiterberger and Josh Brookes. Davies took 10th spot after his crash on the last lap, while Karel Abraham took a credible 11th.

The WSBK circus will now move on towards Thailand for the next round!

Fantastic races both of them. Great to see Chaz and Van Der Mark challenging for the lead and Nicky Hayden off to a promising start too. But Rea's just continuing from where he left off last year, he'll be hard to beat. The Yamaha and MV are not too far off the mark, should be pretty exciting!

Yeah, it was awesome to see some racing again. Any racing. The fact that the racing was so good was just the icing on the cake

Rea will definitely be hard to beat for the championship. PI isn't so much a horsepower track, so the strengths of the Kawa were not fully exploited. The tracks with acceleration of hard corners will probably see the Hondas struggle again.

Yamaha is developing well. The MV is far off the pace, it was seriously lacking in ponies. I am equally interested in seeing how the BMWs develop with four interesting riders in Torres (who did very well last year in WSBK), Reiterberger (German SBK Champion), Brookes (BSB Champion) and Abraham (Moto2 winner and GP racer).

On a side note, did anyone watch the Supersport race. Rookie and Moto2 rider Krumennacher won in his very first race. Fantastic stuff there.

I really like this picture. Chaz Davies hanging on for dear life to keep his engine from stalling. Saved him a zero points finish, as he managed to remount and take 10th.

Also look at the left edge of his front tyre. PI really hammers the left.

Any links to Race-2. Was able to watch highlights of Race 1 on youtube. Great start for Johny.
