    Auto Expo 2016 : Honda CB Unicorn 150 re-launched, priced INR 67,778 ex-Delhi

The wacky looking Navi was the main talking point about the Honda Pavilion at the 2016 Auto Expo. But amidst all the buzz generated by the new launches and swanky concepts, the legendary CB Unicorn 150 made a quiet comeback to the market using the Auto Expo as a platform. The 150 version of one of the most revered 150cc motorcycles was taken off the shelves as it got replaced by the Unicorn 160, leaving a vacuum which was felt by almost everyone. The demand for the motorcycle refused to go down, with prospective customers switching brands for not being able to get the 150 Unicorn. Honda has responded to the choice of its customers and brought the legend back.
The CB Unicorn 150 has been re-launched with no changes made to the model which was removed from the market. The bike has been priced at INR 67778 ex-showroom Delhi. The engine, transmission, and rest of the mechanicals are untouched. The Unicorn 150 continues to be powered by the time tested 149.1cc single cylinder motor with 13.14hp of power and 12.84 Nm of torque. Transmission is taken care of by a 5-speed unit, while the mono rear setup was one of the first to be utilized on any motorcycle in India.

Stylistically too, the Unicorn remains unaltered and carries on with is analogue instrument cluster, 3D Honda logo and 5-spoke black alloy wheels. A wise move or admittance of a strategic error? Do you think the Unicorn 150 was a better motorcycle than the 160 that replaced it? Do share your experiences and views with us...

They could have added a digital console but otherwise I think that it is still the best looking of all of Honda's commuters.

I enquired Unicorn 160 in Thane. The on road price is Rs. 84k and I feel its quite expensive for 160cc. I think 150cc will bridge the price gap.

Why fix it if it ain't broke?

Only concern is it's weight of 147 for a 150cc...my dad owns this from 2008 and completed about 3lk on odo till date his only concern is its weight and skids easily.. I'm suggesting him to sell it get a gearless but hes too much used to riding bike and cannot switch to gearless 😊

If it skids easily, get some better tyres.

Now in 2016 in a crowd of very swanky and capable motorcycles in the 150 to 160 CC segment, what favours owning a Honda CB Unicorn (150)?

I owned a Honda CB Unicorn before I parted with it in Dec 2013. Soon I realized my mistake and have been longing to own one back. Now is that emotional or there is enough merit of still owning one.

I absolutely like the looks of Honda CB Unicorn (150). Also, I favour analogue meters over digital ones. My riding style is not sporting on busy roads and for highways I prefer my 500 CC Royal Enfield.

Am I reasonable to own a Honda CB Unicorn (150) in 2016?

I had first gen Unicorn from 2005 till 2014. I had several incident of front break locking and skid. Problem with my case is I used to do a tank full (> 17l), which seems to increase weight distribution towards front. I never had such skidding incident after I practiced to fill no more than 10l of fuel. Of course, I changed front tyre too.

                            .

Cannot comment on crash guard but that Teflon coating is very expensive. MY CBR 250R(with more plastic fairings) gets a Teflon coating every 6 months for around 350-400Rs. Instead of opting for that Teflon coating you should be opting for the road side assistance and extended warranty. This Unicorn has a new engine and like all new models there might be issues down the road and replacement parts may be expensive for repair.
When my 250R was launched in 2011, the first thing I did was opt for a 5 year warranty with an extra 1500 and over the last 5 years it has helped me many times and saved me well over 10 times the cost of that 1500 rupees I spent on it (1 engine replacement for paint chips and 2 speedometers changed as one bulb failure and another mechanic error as he broke the glass).

An extended warranty is a must for a new model and for a hassle free experience.
