  • Malaysian Government to Legalize Motorcycle Street Racing

The Malaysian government will hold legal street races to counter the growing number of illegal motorcycle racing. The government will close down the capital city, Kuala Lumpur once a week so that young riders can road race legally.

This is an incredible decision from the Malaysian authorities. They would possibly receive a lot of flak for making street racing legal. Something which the riders would have been punished for, would now be organised properly where they will participate legally.

Would something like this reduce the incidents of street racing? On the one hand, it would ensure that those who were indulging in illegal street races will now have an organised platform where they can pit their skills. So they won't have to ride recklessly in traffic, since the roads would be closed to regular traffic and open only for them.

On the other hand, you will have more youngsters who will be inspired to take up racing on the streets, seeing so many others doing so. Would this actually increase the number of people racing on the street in traffic as well?

There are no easy answers to this and we wait and see how this different approach works out in Malaysia. Would it be successful in taming the menace of street racing or would it only bolster the enthusiasm of illegal street racers?

What would be the outcome if something similar was tried as a pilot project in India?

A planned event might invite lesser deaths and injuries... Please note that I used the word, "lesser". Will they create a small scale Isle of Man TT...? I do hope all will be ok.

Streets have objects that you can't do anything about. Traffic signals, buildings, transformers, uneven surface, sometimes even dangerous cliff edges, or other forms of obstruction, and that is all with hardly any runover like racetracks have.

However, the positives are well understood:- that it keeps racing organised on a bigger scale, much bigger overall than a random event happening at Noida/ any one city.

So, overall a thumbs up, but they should proceed with Caution. I do hope they can manage it in such a way that the streets are as safe as a racetrack, or quite close to it. And it is really heartwarming to see politicians thinking in this direction.
    Wish them all the best.

Malaysia has better infrastructure but the bikes are usually low capacity so fatal crashes can be almost avoided if planned well.

India has alot of dust, roads are not always cleaned properly and there is garbage everywhere know the streets while other country's have way better clean up crew that works while everyone sleeps, and there is alot less dust on the road to be thrown on people's faces and bikes. So I don't think it's possible for India

It's only the capital city they are selecting. For a country as big as India, the outcome would be fatal I guess!
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

A very good step by Malaysian govt & good news for racers, ordinary commuters and govt. But this can be the end of street race mafia. No doubt this is also good.

May be one of the reasons why organised race on tracks were not popular and people still wanted street racing, just not for the sake of entertainment only, but also no/low cost high bidding & earning where mafia may also be involved.

This new legal street race will be a threat to them. Slowly govt will start regulating the bidding side and will try to catch the illegal money makers.
