  • ARAI proposes Mandatory ABS on 125cc & above Bikes By 2017: xBhp News

The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has proposed mandatory ABS (anti-lock braking system) on bikes having engine displacements larger than 125cc.

    Rashmi Urdhwareshe, director, ARAI, said:
“The government is very keen on bringing ABS (Antilock Braking System) on two-wheelers now. While at the moment the ABS technology (for two-wheelers) is expensive, the Ministry feels that stability of the vehicle should be given more importance. That is one regulation that we are working on.”
ARAI is currently formulating the regulations for mandatory ABS that will be later proposed to the central ministry and will get the final approval from the concerned authorities, ARAI is boosting its capabilities with massive safety laboratory completely equipped with a crash test centre for passenger vehicles that will be operational by April 2015 and will be opened for the industry by June.

However, for two-wheelers, ARAI does not have a dedicated test track of its own, and uses the test track at VRDE (Vehicles Research & Development Establishment, a lab belonging to DRDO), Ahmednagar which is currently being upgraded.

The timeline for the new regulations is directly associated with readiness of test track at VRDE. Once the preliminary changes are in place, the implementation could come in early 2017.

    News Approved.

ARAI also plans to make ABS mandatory for Commercial Vehicles as early as coming 2015. So, two wheelers still get an extra 1-2 years.

Although, the 2 wheeler segment will get affected in terms of pricing, and second hand vehicles might be more in demand due to this, but this inevitably is the way to go, specially in a country like India where anyone pops up from anywhere you least expect them.

Bosch and Continental will be happy with this decision, I guess. I have a Duke 390, and even on a rainy day, I just engage both the brakes and stop in a straight line: No skidding or anything. Its definitely safe.

Talking about demerits, ABS has made us lesser skilled riders, agreed, but in future if all bikes come with ABS, will we even need the braking skill anymore? Of course, riding won't be as involving anymore, but I guess that's a compromise we have to undertake...

Wow, that's a very good move, may be it will increase few thousand rupee in prices of bikes, but we see people sliding on roads due to tyre lock every now & then...

Even we need them on scooters, recently I have seen a Activa sliding due to rear tyre lock with pillion while coming from a flyover in Delhi, both of them saved themselves because they were not riding more than 40kmph.

Although ABS is a good thing...the cost of ABS at current rate is too high for it to b implemented.

It will make two-wheelers costly by atleast 10'000 rupees, which is not a good thing...maybe the government should start from higher capacity bikes first like 250/300 + CC.

And i doubt that even with an ABS, those activas will be able to stop in time, unless it is combined ABS. The real reason for those activas not being able to stop in time is the 90% of indians have this phobia that front brakes should never be applied.

Now lets see how long does it takes the govt. to make this 'proposal' into a mandatory thing.

          Ride safe and have fun.

My next bike will be something that gives me a choice to turn ABS on/off. Mainly because I love the brake feel and modulation of the same while on a two wheeler, but also wouldn't mind it while cruising along.

Lots of things are going to be different by year 2017 I expect, concerning the bike market. I'd expect the mid-segment to be coming to some shape by then.

              I don't think so.
According to this site, Buy Product the cost is $62 [around Rs.3800], But I am sure the manufactures will get is at much bellow price than quoted here.

S*** happens ABS could fail, so skill yes. but again it could affect the future younger gen who start riding immediately on these abs equipped bikes maybe say in 5 years from now. For the others who have been riding for a while now, the failure of ABS especially on the 125's , 150's will have a lesser impact on their braking capabilities.
For those discussing about the activas, my opinion based on riding one for a long time, it is safer to use more of the rear brakes on these scooters for most people, for the fact that the weight transfer to the front does not happen easily due to the front suspension set up. Bikes with telescopic forks dive a considerable amount but these scoots don't.. so the front brake needs to be applied or rather tapped gently to shed speed and not be used as a sole/primary stopping source. One must also understand that the tires are not the stickiest n neither are these scoots powerful enough to generate enough torque/traction by just twisting the throttle.
The combi brake system does exactly this.. focusing more on the rear.

That's something that was bound to come up at some point of time. Though the ABS set-up presently costs a considerable amount of money, I guess with the increase in demand in future, situations might improve.

Would be really happy if this comes to picture in real world. The more is done to make machines safer, lesser the chances would be of human suffering due to their own shortcomings.

                      Somewhere on net I read,

Now manufactures will start producing more engines with 124.5cc capacity. LOL

Since 99 % of the population use 300cc below bikes its kinda no sense to make it mandatory only above 300cc....infact I dad him self had a skid about 3 times though he rides at 40kmph .our roads and retard f*#$ing jaywalkers demand these norms...

Brilliant move. Finally the authorities are taking a step towards safety. This will be good for all learners who just started riding. Making CBS compulsory along with would have been great.

It would make more sense to have road traffic rules and discipline first, how about having side view mirrors in a usable position compulsory?

Beware of Bread, don't say I didn't warn you!
More than 98 percent of convicted criminals are bread eaters !
Statistics show that more than 75 % of violent crimes are committed within 24 hours of eating bread !
Bread is known to be extremely addictive. Subjects deprived of bread and given only water, actually begged for bread after just two days !
Bread has been proven to kill. Scientists have now uncovered alarming evidence that 100% of the people who eat bread will eventually die !

Actually if you ask me the first move towards safety should be to make "drivers ed" or riding and driving classes mandatory in schools from 11th standard. Just like they do in European countries. And once it is made mandatory, to make the students take it seriously it should be made a part of their curriculum and board exams should be conducted for the same.
Believe me, if this is done all the idiots in the country who don't deserve drivers licenses will be immediately weeded out and traffic problems will be significantly reduced (my estimation would be 60-65% reduction).
