  • Samsung and Yamaha Develop Smart Windshield Concept

Samsung, in collaboration with Yamaha has developed a new technology - adding a smartphone-connected display to the windshield of a motorcycle. The 'smart' windshield displays notifications like calls and texts on a head-up display on the screen, with the software designed to be hands-free.

The screen is transparent and located low on the windshield so it doesn't obscure the rider's vision. Connecting to a smartphone via wi-fi, an app on the phone relays information like GPS navigation, email and messaging notifications and incoming calls. The app also sends a text response automatically to incoming calls, telling the caller you're on the road and can't answer.

Re: Samsung and Yamaha Develop Smart Windshield Concept

I would love to see some original implementations of this idea. Its been around for so long. See, 7 years ago, I imagined it. Then, 3 years ago or so, Ather energy showed us a prototype with this kind of screen.

And frankly speaking, what is it about notifications that's so important that you should get it anyhow, no matter when you're with family, riding, driving, sleeping, inside toilet, etc? What's the craze? I remember how we used to be in peace during the Nokia days, before 2010. Calls and SMSes were there, but for a purpose and they used to be expensive back then... So, it did feel premium.

And look today, cheap smartphones, FB, Whatsapp, Hike, etc. giving notifications all the day and all night, and if you ignore, be prepared to check 100s of them later on. I mean, how should it matter to me (or you) if Angle Priya changed her cover picture? Or if Amardeep sent me a life in Canday Crush? I already have a life Paa ji, You get a life!
Not to mention the 2 Blue ticks that have probably spoiled more relations than date rape, drugs and date violence put together!

And should you uninstall them, suddenly you become the old man of your social group. Amazing, isn't it? So, in the future you won't be able to ride bikes in peace, is it?

Instead of this social BS, I would want them to create a console with a rich color display, ride data recording, including accurate error reporting and with an encouraging wallpaper of your loved one during ignition, and a parking lot digital music player, and a closed navigation system, and loads of ride data for recording, like lean angle, tyre pressure, engine temperature, etc... Heck you could even add digital cameras at various angles or so.
Anything except this connected rubbish that we propose!

Re: Samsung and Yamaha Develop Smart Windshield Concept

I echo Samarth sir's thoughts almost completely. Lesser the distractions for a motorcyclist, the better.
Except the Whatsapp portion that is, because "People who matter don't mind and those who mind don't matter".

People have ruined their lives in the name of technology.
Let me brief about the general culture of Bangalore. People hardly know their neighbors. They talk to the land lord only when they have to pay the rent. They don't meet friends.
I was like them too, but over the last year I started meeting people who matter and slowly I cut (completely) from ones who don't! Whatsapp/FB/Social Media takes around 40-45 min at night. My phone bills have gone high of late and no, I don't yap all night with a girl, but with friends and family.

I don't listen to songs/take calls while riding.

Crux of my post - Get a life. Put the technology in silent mode. This Samsung-Yamaha product is one such distraction and I hope it never comes to fruition.
        Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.
Because everyone who passes, isn't a martyr!
