This could mean that excise duty on two-wheelers will go up by 2-6 %. In June this year BJP government extended the concessions of two-wheelers by 6 months to December 31. According to the industry estimates, Vehicles prices will rise up to 2-6 %.

Manufacturers had asked government to extent the excise duty relief, as the removal of this excise duty relief could impact the Vehicle sales.

The Decision of removing the excise duty relief comes as a result of government lacking in meeting its ambitious fiscal deficit target of 4.1%8 % to 12 %.

Earlier, in February, the UPA government had cut excise duty on two-wheelers to help the industry tide over a demand slump. The excise duty relief was applicable till June 30 and later extended till December 31 by the BJP.

Bajaj has already announced the hike in prices of its brands Platina and Discover by January 2015.

What really gets to my nerve about this price hike is the fact that when excise was reduced initially, most bike manufacturers (especially of cheaper bikes) did not pass on the benefits. Also, bikes booked before the price cut were charged full price. Now they want to sell us December and November made bikes (which left the factories for a cheaper 8% excise) for the price of January made bikes (which pay 12% excise).

If you look at it, prices (for bikes) haven't really fallen at all over the past few years, not even for the entry level commuters which are supposed to get cheaper and cheaper as manufacturers improve efficiency in the manufacture of their cheapest products. Yamaha Crux, the 106cc barebones bike with its ultra frugal skeletal tyres (2.5" front and 2.75" rear) costs 50,000 on road Bangalore after the price hike. Seems atleast 10k more than what it should be priced at.

          Gotta agree with MHG!

Suzuki's sales volume seems to have increased YoY which is a positive sign. This is mainly because of the Gixxer I guess.

But I am surprised about their price increase after the excise duty increase this month. The price of the Gixxer has gone up by just 600 rupees approximately. I expected in to be around 1500 to 2000/-
Owns a baby Gixxer starting Jan '15

This has given an excellent opportunity for Automobile manufacturers like Bajaj to charge more from customer for bikes that were imported last year. They would be selling their inventory at higher cost having paid last year's excise duty for them.
Is it possible to do a consumer case on this?

              +1 for that
I was looking to buy Hero Hunk and the sales guy is offering me a 2014 bike ( that too from Aug i think) for the increased price and when I questioned him about the new price for a old bike he said that whatever is the rate on the day invoice is made that would be the price I need to pay which feels unfair to me. Im thinking Id rather pay the increased price for the 2015 made bike instead of going with a older bike

Honda and Hero did pass on the benefit of excise cuts in February 2014, did not hear of other manufacturers.

This should be reported to consumer court. Either Manufacturers or dealers are making money out of it.

Confirmation on price hike : KTM RC 200 is now available at 1.80 OTR and 390 is available for 2.29 OTR DEHRADUN. Lucky to get my RC390 in 2014 saved atleast 7-8k 😎
