KP, as you may know very well, I never believed in those premium fuels. I always used to get good mileage with normal petrol, and I concluded this all with lot of tests with different fuel stations and different fuels.

Satish got mileage of 10 kmpl extra when he switched back to normal fuel. He was really astonished.

true. and that's what I always said... extra money for premium fuels is not worth it in my view... only little better thing was XtraPremium but I don't go for premium fuel in my bikes unless there is no Unleaded available.

Unleaded petrol cost me a carb. coz of the mud and dust particles that used to come complimentary with the petrol... have recently switched to speed. So far the mileage has definetly improved, and am sure atleast it wont screw my carb!!

          HydBiker and Ravi,

Taking cue from you guys, I am going to switch to Speed 93 first and then to normal unleaded to see how my bull responds. I will keep you posted. And meanwhile, I guess it is time for Xbhpians to go out and try out different fuels and post their opinions. This way, we can come to a conclusion as to which fuel suits which bike.

On my YBX, I had filled up Speed97 on more than a few occasions. And the difference is smoothness was amazing to say the least. Even HP Power petrol resulted in increased smoothness. Economy remained unchanged in both of the above cases. Speed93 and Xtrapremium didn't make any noticeable difference to both economy and smoothness. I haven't tried Shell super unleaded or normal unleaded on my YBX yet.

and to add some more fire... I feel a lot of diff between speed and extra premium.

an 08 Busa used to drink speed and gave mileage not more than 13kmpl. Shifted to extra premium... which boosted upto 19.8 kmpl at one stage....

Cost you a carb? Could you be a little more specific?

If you fill an adultrated fuel, be it normal or premium, you carb will go for a toss.

Running smooth on premium fuels may have been experienced by most of the people because of the additives, but I do not see any change in fuel efficiency.

What I would like to point here is, a good unleaded petrol would never cause the engine to run rough. You cannot testify whether the fuel is good or bad, or for the matter, whether it is really xtrapremium or speed or power. It may be that they are selling just normal good unleaded petrol in the name of branded fuels.

One example here. I have filled speed on many occasions at a particular BP and felt the bike to be just normal and not any extra smoother or any extra feeling. Recently, I have filled normal petrol in fuel station where one of our xbhpians had a good faith in it. I felt the bike to run a bit smoother. If you see the whole thing, may be most of the dealers are selling good normal unleaded petrol as premium.

Maybe what I said earilier about SBKs being more noticeably effected with these premium fuels is true, rather than our small 'puny' bikes.

Yeah! Octane numbers really make a difference with SBK's. Also I want to tell you that you will not get a clean fuel in India as in other countries. You cannot just tell that xtra premium is good or speed is good. You may get low fuel efficiency if you are cheated with quantity of the fuel, still then bike runs smoother being good fuel.

You cannot say it is Unleaded. It is dirt that came with petrol either once or twice or over a period of time... that dirt can come with any petrol.

Also, increase in mileage could be because of a new carburetor. Our CD100 was giving about 42KMPL at one stage... we knew the carb needed a replacement. Went in for a Indian made carb made for CD100 (not the imported one HH supplies that costs about Rs 1500) for Rs 650 and the mileage bumped up to 65 KMPL immediately!

I think, the GOI has mentioned specific colors to be followed for different octane petrol and for premium petrol.

The regular unleaded is supposed to be colorless. can someone please dig this up?

I have used Speed, Power, Xtra premium besides regular fuel. I always tank up my bike and i have never noticed any kind of a significant change in the drive of my Apache RTR leave aside fuel efficiency.
Also one point that i heard in an argument in CNBC that the extra cost on the premium fuels is near 10 paise/ per litre.
I think rest of the amount is used for publicity and contests which keep on running time to time. Also those fuel card bonuses. These things cost and the extra charges cover them.
Never upgrade without getting your basics RIGHT.

I have different view on these kind of fuels...

I had my Xtreme, Experimented it with variet of fuels.

On SHELL Super, I used to get a mileage more of around 4-5kmpl, But I can suspect here that quantity of fuel here. Usually many petrol bunks dont fill exact 1000ml of petrol. Shell bunks here in hyderabad are known to be genuine.

                              Where as on My R15...

When used with Speed 97, There is noticable difference in the smoothness of the engine but the drastic fall in topend, My bike dies to cross 130kmph on speedo.

Coming to other premium Fuels, Xtrapremium is normally what i use, Because I found this particular petrol bunk (near my home) to be good and with out adulteration.

And regular speed, There is slight difference in smoothness when compared to Xtra Premium. ( Never used HP Power till now).

Used Normal petrol only few times, There is slight difference in pick up(more) when used with Xtra premium.

                              @KP

Yes, I find difference in color of the petrols. Normal petrol is almost colorless, Where as shell super is dark yellowish and other petrols are pale yellow.

Wow, thats quite a change! But why would a carb require a change? I wasn't aware carbs wear out with use?

Which make was this made in India carb, btw?
