The technology is inspired by the Alpinestar’s Tech-Air street airbag system, that requires no motorbike-mounted sensors for it to function. It uses an algorithm that detects looming danger precisely and inflates the full upper body airbag to offer a much more effective crash protection system when the body encounters the very first impact.

For it to be fully operational, the BMW Motorrad Street Air Dry textile riding jacket is interconnected with the Alpinestar system vest. It offers instantaneous inflatable upper body protection to the back, kidneys, chest and shoulders.

BMW’s new jacket offers – Full airbag inflation with-in 25 milliseconds for protection during crash impacts, immediately ready to use, placing sensors near to the body, can be used on as well as off road. There is no need to deactivate the system if leaving the road. A durable and water resistant casing protects the system.

The Street Air jacket is the first safety product which will be launched under an exclusive agreement, between BMW Motorrad and Alpinestar and it will be available for both male as well as female motorcyclists in different color variants from October 2016.

So, if you're on a Ducati, you'll be seen riding a Ducati with a BMW logo on your jacket, and give everyone the "got the wrong bike" vibe... is it?

Let's hope BMW allows Alpinestars to launch this individually later. I guess it works with a built in chargeable battery, is it?
Overall, its a great idea, but not that "super innovative" idea though.

OT: You know I had this very idea 3-5 years ago... But I had it for helmet.
I had an idea that people will wear a shoulder mounted setup, which on being subjected to one hard jerk, will immediately inflate and protect the wearer from the crash.

My idea was that, it doesn't matter how much helmet technology improves, some Indian people who never wear helmet will start wearing this sort of stuff... because its without the common excuse of "demerits" like spoiled hair, distraction, smaller field of view, etc...
Of course, it might not even protect as much as an ISI helmet, but for a 40 kmph rider, something is a lot better than nothing, right?

But of course, never had the resources or research to even make a prototype of it.

Alpinestars have been selling such jackets for quite sometime Tech-Air™ Street Airbag System | Alpinestars I think the only thing this article conveys is that BMW has taken A* tech into their BMW branded jackets thats all.

The exact same thing exists for cyclists Hövding – Airbag for cyclists: How it works
It may not provide adequate protection for motorcycle speeds though.

"WOW" ------ Was my first reaction.

As i read further and watched videos and after converting $2,000 = Rs.1,33,309.90
"Phewww" would be my final take on the matter.

I never knew similar system is used in MotoGP.

Furthermore, is it reusable after a crash?

Yes. It uses a battery setup which gives a backup for 25 hrs on charging for 1 hr.
And the sensors are placed on the shoulders indeed.
