  • Ducati looking for partner in India to make small-engine bikes for global markets

NEW DELHI: Iconic Italian bike maker Ducati is looking for a partner in India to make small-engine motorcycles for global markets.
The company says it is open to looking at partnership with companies such as Hero MotoCorp and Royal Enfield, though no such proposal has been made yet.
"These thoughts could become a reality in the medium to long term," Andrea Buzzoni, global sales & marketing director for Ducati told TOI here. "In India, you have robust two-wheeler players, who have competence in terms of engineering, production capacity."

Owned by the Volkswagen group, Ducati is now looking for a larger play across key western markets such as Europe and the US and large-volume emerging economies such as China, India and Brazil.

And thus comes the desire for smaller-sized engines - between 250cc and 500cc - which could drive in huge volumes to its current annual global sales of around 55,000 units. Ducati's current portfolio is dominated mainly by motorcycles powered by engines between 800cc and 1,200cc.

    News Approved and Quashed

It didn’t take long for Ducati to refute Indian news reports that the Italian motorcycle manufacturer was considering building bikes in the sub-continent.

I read somewhere that there are rumors that Ducati are considering partnering with Royal Enfield :O

Can you seriously imagine anything worse than that? Having your Ducati serviced / repaired by Royal Enfield? OMG.

doesn't make any sense for ducati to go with either hero or enfield.

hero is trying to develop in house products since honda left. also its known for 100 cc commuters. bajaj, tvs atleast has some ambitions to make sports bikes so ktm and bmw could find some common goals. what will be common b/w hero and ducati. ducati is hardcore sports bikes. even their cruisers are known for sports bike handling.

and i dont even wanna talk about enfield in this regard.

looks like some journalist has some free time so is spreading rumours.

Well ducati India has no plans to have a partnership with hero & Enfield.

Ducati India has revealed that they have no plans to partner with any of the two wheeler brands in India. This comes after Times of India's report.

              No small capacity Ducati bikes.

Hero is concentrating on 100-125cc bikes and mopeds, because they sell in very high volume = business, in turn good profit = improving the R&D for making higher capacity bikes.

Unlike bajaj and tvs, hero got screwed because EBR was Bankrupted.

Ducati can go with bajaj if it like to go for light weight because of well established market and brand value ...........just my thought

Never say never. Who would have predicted that the likes of BMW would put out a 310cc commuter bike?

The world is realizing that the Asian market is massive and untapped, and there's a healthy appetite for smaller / mid-range bikes here. Who knows what plans Ducati is working on for India.

Actually Hero screwed EBR by not paying them the remaining money for the R&D work they did on certain new models that was showcased at the Expo. Then Hero poached the engineers from EBR which was why EBR had to file for bankruptcy all over again.
