Wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle is a rule to be followed by all the motorcyclist. Both the rider and pillion must wear a helmet according to the rules. Is it really followed by all? Traffic Police of Mysore City say, on average 300+ motorcyclists are fined for not wearing a helmet while riding. Paying a fine is considered as 'normal' by the general public and even after paying a fine no one bothers to follow the rule of wearing a helmet.

To bring an effective solution for making the riders wear a helmet, the Mysore Traffic police gave an order that apart from paying fine the motorcycle will also be detained until the rider gets a helmet to continue from the spot. Moreover, Mysore Traffic police also asked the Supreme Court to enforce strict rules on motorcycle insurance. If there is no insurance cover for the motorcycle, the bike will be detained and will be taken to the nearest traffic police station. The owner of the motorcycle needs to either renew or get new insurance for the motorcycle to get it back from the police station.

The order is effective from Sunday 26th Feb 2017. Not only in Mysore city, we hope the same rule will be implemented all over the country to make riders wear a helmet and ride safely with insurance cover. Kudos to Mysore Traffic Police.

Police commissioner AS Rao said: "Though the law requires that both the rider and pillion rider should wear helmets, it is found that rules are violated on the city roads daily. Besides imposing fine, we will detain the vehicle till the rider follows the rule."
