  • Honda ends Monkey's production from 2017

Honda Japan has decided to finish production of the original 50CC bike 'Monkey' at the end of August 2017. President Chiaki Kato of Honda Motorcycle Japan announced at a press conference held at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show 2017 booth on March 24 while launching the 2017 "50th Anniversary" Z50M Monkey bike.

"The Monkey celebrates its 50th anniversary this year after launching the first "Monkey Z 50 M" in 1967. The monkey has received support from everyone for half a century with lovely designs and well-established engines, unfortunately the production will end this year", the President said.

"The exhaust gas regulations will be strengthened this year. To clear the third domestic emission regulation equivalent to Euro 4 with a small displacement bike requires a modification to the technology. It is extremely difficult, both costly and reasonably difficult, "he explained as the background to the end of Monkey's production.
Furthermore, President Kato pointed out that "stricter regulations will come again in 2021. There is still a limit of 50 cc. When 2030 arrives, the survival of ICE engines does not seem feasible when everything will be running on electricity at the time."

Honda ends Monkey's production from 2017

Honda has decided to stop production of the original 50CC bike 'Monkey' at the end of August 2017. To celebrate its 50 years anniversary, Honda has made a special 50th edition of 'Monkey' though it has been announced at a press conference held at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show 2017 that the production ends this year. The first bike was launched in 1967 and the last bike in 2017.

President Chiaki Kato of Honda Motorcycle, Japan said, "Monkey celebrates its 50th anniversary this year after launching the first Monkey Z 50 M in 1967. The monkey who received support from everyone for half a century with lovely designs and well-established engines, unfortunately, the production will end."

Explained on the background to the end of Monkey's production, Kato said, "We will strengthen the exhaust gas regulation from this year. To clear the third domestic emission regulation equivalent to Euro 4 with a small displacement is extremely difficult, both costly and reasonably difficult." Furthermore, "Stricter regulations will come again in 2021. There is still a limit of 50 cc, when the masculine type was dominated by internal combustion engines at the time of 2030 I think it is tough to survive."
