    Petrol Pumps to be Shut Sundays in 8 States

    This is really sad news. There go our Sunday rides. This rationale of the government is moronic at best because it is a proven fact that in the case of rationing water on certain days actually leads to overconsumption and wastage, so why not for fuel?

    Slow clap for the geniuses (if the news be true!)

    So trucks going across the country will rest on Sunday, so will buses and people cannot get out of the city on Saturday, because they will never make it back on a Sunday

    Though it still appears more of a arm twisting strategy by the Petrol Pump unions rather than a directive of the government. They have after all being asking for higher margins for sometime now.

      yep.. looks all the same to me.. just increase their margins, they will work for 25 hours & 367 days also
      giving that a cover of the PM's it's a nice strategy and that "1" guy doing that shift for "emergency" can quote their own rate or say "no fuel available" if you won't give the money they ask.. I have seen that strategy of quoting high rate, when asked about MRP, they simply say, "no stock available" in spite of having it right in front of us and giving it to others.. happens for water bottles at most tourist locations.. just the way some people function.. there is a special place in hell for such people..

        shouldn't the govt have some say, or even an administrative authority, on this though ?

        i mean this seems to be a decision taken by the petrol dealers' union (or something of that sort) inspired by a recent suggestion of Modi to conserve oil and all that, but it's unclear whether this decision by the petroleum dealers is sanctioned and approved by the govt or not...one would think in matters of something as important and basic as fuel supply, the govt would be the ultimate authority that can actually approve or disapprove of any new initiative of this sort...

        but then nothing can happen, certainly not something as major as this, without some sort of an approval from the govt, so yeah i guess the govt is also to be blamed for sanctioning this half-assed initiative by the petrol unions, even if it didnt actually invent this idea...

        and no oil will be conserved, not significantly anyway...people will just start filling more on saturdays and/or stock petrol in empty bottles etc...lol..

          Dont really think that the government has yet approved this move. Petrol comes under the essential commodities act and as such I dont see how this decision (definitely because of greed..they dont give two hoots about the environment and conservation) couldnt clash with the act.

            If the govt. can be blamed for anything, it is for not having sorted out the issue with the Petrol Pump Unions till now over the demand in increase in margins. These are just pressure tactics being used by the PPUs for getting what they want. Something which should be settled with discussion and dialogue. This is a democracy after all.

            A petrol pump owner is a businessman at the end of the day. He is doing it for profit and not for charity. If they feel that they aren't making enough money from the current margins on sale, then that concern needs to be addressed. By ignoring a problem, it doesn't just go away.

                All valid points of view, however this directive is from the PM and is a call to conserve oil. Perhaps the government wants to narrow the deficit by reducing our import bill, off which oil is the largest item. Remember the gold debacle!

                  If they really want to reduce oil imports its better they ban huge SUVs and other vehicles which consume a lot of fuel. Honestly how much power is usable on the indian road scenarios???

                    Next step should be to stop supplying fuel to politician's planes so they too don't get to go on a vacation with their family. Just wear a few helmets when you inform the politician that his plane flying days are over because fuel conservation

                    Also, now there will be huge queues at pumps on Saturday evenings for sure. Many will fill fuel in jerrycans and store at home for emergency. This is only going to cause more fuel consumption since people will start storing fuel and in the heat most of it evaporates

                      Even if they ban SUV's and all.... People are still awesome in doing something.... they will just take another car fill it and take out the petrol into empty cans and again go to fuel station to fill up...

                        just read this - oil ministry hasn't approved of this move by a section of the petrol union members/dealers...apparently most petrol dealers are also not in favour of this move according to this article - Oil ministry red-flags Sunday holiday for petrol pumps, says such move will inconvenience the general public - The Financial Express


                        maybe the concerned ministers, even Modi himself, read this thread before finally stepping in and red flagging the idea : D
