Ather Energy S340, India’s first smart electric scooter unveiled today. Ather Energy S340 runs on IP67-rated Lithium-Ion battery pack. The scooter can reach at 72 kmph top speed with a range of upto 60 kms.

The Structurally robust battery pack offers an uncompromised ride for 50,000 kms. The vehicle achieves an 80% charge in 50 minutes in fast charging mode and can be charged from any 5A normal socket in normal mode. It has a distinct sporty look with zero lateral weight offset, a low centre of gravity and intuitive LED lights that respond to ambient light conditions.

Tarun Mehta, Co-founder of Ather Energy said:
“The future will be connected and inevitably electric and the Ather S340 has been built as a manifestation of this philosophy, It is an unapologetically electric vehicle, it has been designed and built mostly in-house with engineering precision.”
The touchscreen dashboard integrates cloud based data to help personalise the consumer ride experience. Features like user profile based sign in, on board navigation, pre-configured drive modes like sport and economy allow a personalised experience. Its integration with the S340 Mobile App keeps the rider connected with the vehicle, to configure ride and profile preferences and sync navigation routes remotely. Predictive analytics and aggregation of ride statistics enable customised recommendations. As more vehicles go in-field, aggregate rider and vehicle data will help in customised vehicle updates that will be delivered automatically over the air.

Tarun added:
“Intelligent vehicles will revolutionize our commute experience in future and we have just begun that journey.”
The production version of Ather S340 will roll out by the end of this year. However the pre ordering will start in Bangalore, Chennai and Pune in the next quarter. The company will build a online-only purchase model with doorstep delivery and service.

Tarun Mehta also said:
“The automobile industry is in the midst of a huge technological disruption. The technology of electric vehicle has advanced in leaps and bounds. It is the preferred choice because of its inherent efficiency that will shape urban commute and the smart cities of tomorrow. The other aspect is the connectedness of the world around us, enabling integration of devices and making our life experiences seamless. Intelligent vehicles will revolutionise our commute experience in the future and the S340 stands at the cusp of this exciting reality.”
Ather Energy will also open Experience centres to facilitate test rides in the next few months. The company is also aiming at setting up public charging infrastructure in their operational cities partnering with government and private enterprises.

Re: Ather Energy S340 Electric Scooter Unveiled

So, we have these vital figures,

72 kmph top speed,
50,000 kms uncompromised battery life, (which means it might go on for longer duration than that. I did hear 1 Lac kms at a point of time)
80% charge in 50 minutes,
60 kms in one charge,

These figures don't sound bad by any means at all. And since they claim extensive testing, I don't think we must worry much.

Is the electric commuter scene finally set to change?

I do hope they come out with a motorcycle too.

Ather Energy S340 runs on Litium-Ion battery pack that rest on the floorboard of the vehicle, sending minimal weight to the tyres..
They did it again. I think, "low center of gravity" is the term? Or even "mass centralisation" is passable?

Or maybe just, I'm wrong instead (do let me know where?).

I wish them all the best and hope they will be poster boys of "Make in India " success campaign.

OTOH, I believe prospective customers would be apprehensive about buying from a new brand, when they don't have brick and mortar setups for dealership and ASS. I mean online buying and door step service sounds good and would reduce the overheads, but it also means it is easier for the manufacturer to shut shop if the going gets tough.

I also hope the display offers rel time range calculation that would calculate available range on the basis of load and throttle input. I mean 60kms would the range under ideal conditions right? It would be lower with pillion, etc right?

The success and adoption of electrics will ultimately boil down to the pricing. There are quite a few electric scooters in the Indian market for price below INR50K. Ather could either choose to compete in the same segment, or quote a higher price claiming superior specs. In case they choose the former, they already have a winner. But should they choose the premium route, I doubt their success. Going slightly OT here, the Mahindra E2O was an excellent package with good range, air-con and lots more space than the Reva, but it met a poor reception from customers due to it's high initial pricing.

Re: Ather Energy S340 Electric Scooter Unveiled

I don't see a big threat to big manufacturers for 5-6 years at least, from this. But, I do see them getting tremendously successful though, by small scale standards, if their homework is strong.

To match the bigger companies, they need:-

1. a manufacturing plant that can produce thousands & lacs of units monthly, which translates to hundreds & thousands of units daily. And people to run that plant. It will take time to reach that level.

2. An efficient and reliable logistics network which supplies them decided parts, (Every company does so, today's manufacturers are assemblers to a big extent.) For example, for just for a speedometer unit, fairing and other parts, you won't set up a plastic factory. So, you get them from Plastic specialists.

3. a wider and more reliable distribution & service network (I know Flipkart funded it, but India's perception has to be changed slowly only)

4. a more expanded product range. Today's pampered customers reject multiple products together on excuses like looks, gut feeling, etc. before deciding to final one. And most customers know what they need. If he needs a 180cc motorcycle, he's unlikely to get something that top at, say 70 or 80 kmph.

Re: Ather Energy S340 Electric Scooter Unveiled

UPDATE: Guys, some facts were discovered about the Scooter recently... Check these points out:-

1. 0-100 kmph timing of 12.11 seconds, which is very swift by scooter standards. This also means that the previous report of 72 kmph top speed wasn't in this context. Read on...
2. The model has a range of 60 km at a top speed of 72 kmph.
3. The maximum torque stands at 14 Nm. Its easy for electric vehicles to show amazing torque. Even most train engines have electric motors to run them, both diesel and electric ones. Despite this, the image shows 103.6NM as the torque on wheel, which is believable for the performance it gives, but 14NM is shown as the torque of the motor, which is baffling. We're not yet clear how this is possible, or whether its a mistake. @oldfox Sir, I request you to shed some light on this confusion. designfreak Please check this. Would love to get a clarification, because a TVS electric Scooty which touched just 40 kmph, had 33NM torque. So, 103NM is the believable figure here, so why do you quote 14NM?
4. The lithium ion battery claims to charge till 80% in less than 50 minutes and has a life of approximately 50,000 kms. This we already knew.
5. It is also believed that the battery can sustain itself under 1m of water for about half an hour before any problem can surface.
6. A touchscreen dashboard (integrated with the company’s cloud database), two riding modes (sport and economy) and a smart LED headlamp that controls the output based on the ambient lighting conditions.
7. The S340 also has a storage space that is said to accommodate two helmets. Suspension duties are taken care of by twin telescopic forks upfront while the rear uses a monoshock suspension.
