2019 KTM 390 Adventure Spy Photos

This just in from the We Knew It Was Coming But Couldn’t Prove It Department: The KTM 390 Adventure is being developed for the 2019 model year. Now, let’s see what the spy shots have to tell us.
The Austrians haven’t said anything official, but an executive of KTM’s Indian partner, Bajaj Auto, let slip to the press that the 390 Adventure was coming. “KTM is a niche brand for a select few,” says Amit Nandi, Bajaj senior vice president in charge of KTM’s Indian operations. “With the 390 Adventure we would be making our long awaited entry into the niche premium dual-sport segment which is a very apt segment for Indian roads.”

Not surprisingly, the engine looks unchanged from the 390 Duke. What we can see is that the radiator has an enlarged shroud although the radiator itself looks unchanged. The exhaust plumbing has been rerouted under the engine, and the muffler has a slightly less triangular shape. We find it troubling that no skid plate is visible in the photos since the header is now extremely vulnerable, as is the rest of the engine. Given that the 390 engine already had a pretty broad, flat power curve, we don’t anticipate any real changes to the power delivery other than the EFI updates that are required by the new exhaust system.

Stylistically, the 390 Adventure retains much of the family resemblance to the Duke with a few notable differences. First, the headlight nacelle is much larger, looking more like the 790 Adventure, with a portion that extends almost to the top edge of the TFT display (an item we expect to mirror the 2019 instrumentation on the Duke). Mounted on top of the nacelle is an abbreviated windscreen to redirect some of the wind blast during long rides. Similarly, a pair of clear polycarbonate wings have sprouted below the dual headlights; both the windscreen and wings are similar in shape to those found on the 790 Adventure R. Absent, however, is the 790’s motocross-style fender, with KTM opting for a tire-hugging design instead. The 390 Adventure also does not appear to have the enlarged lower section in the fuel tank on the larger model.

In a break with the 390 Duke’s appearance, the entire trellis rear subframe has been covered with plastic bodywork. A close examination of the rear bodywork reveals a flatter profile and notches that look as if they could be used to mount hard bags – though the notches are oddly close together. Having optional saddlebags available would explain why the muffler’s shape was made flatter on the outboard side, too. We would also expect that the rear subframe was beefed up to handle the extra weight that saddlebags and a passenger would add. Further, the rear of the bike looks longer than on the Duke. What portions of the main frame that remain visible appear to be unchanged from the 390 Duke.

With regards to the 390 Adventure’s dirt-worthiness, the same inverted fork appears to be used, though visible compression and rebound clickers can be seen atop the fork tubes (similar to the setup on the 790 Adventure R). We expect that the spring rate and valving would also be updated for the bike’s more varied duties. The same goes for the rear suspension. The handlebar has a more upward bend, most likely to make the riding position better for when standing on the pegs – which are now aggressively teethed off-road items with rubber inserts as is standard on the larger Adventure models. Also in a move pointed towards off-road intentions, the grips receive hand guards.

Given KTM’s performance-focused off-road pedigree, we would be surprised to see anything other than a 21-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear for a dual-purpose travel enduro. As is standard with the rest of the current 390 line-up, Metzler tires can be seen outfitted on the 390 Adventure in these spy shots. Excel rims are being used, though it’s difficult to tell whether the wee-ADV will use a tubeless set up or not. If we were gambling men, which our Canadian counterpart Dennis “Snake Eyes” Chung is, we would bet on tubeless.

Identical to other 390 models’ braking components, the 390 Adventure uses a single rotor up front with a ByBre twin-piston caliper, similarly, the rear stopping power is provided by a single piston caliper and single disc. Both front and rear ABS rings are visible in these pictures.
Looks like we may be heading back to Mexico sooner than later for another Wee-ADV shootout… Or perhaps somewhere more exotic…

Damn, I can't wait for this! At first i was going to go for the G310GS, but after hearing about this KTM, just postponed my desicion of buying a bike by almost a year! Well the wait is worth it i guess considering the rumours about the pricing of the BMW G310 twins.

I am somehow now liking this look of Adventure, it appears like a naked on stilts. Hope it is not the actual version which will make it to production.

10 ltrs is good enough for city commuting since we need adv versions for our pothole filled roads

No way it will be around 10 litres, what is the use of calling it an Adv if it does not have a relatively large fuel tank? I am sure KTM understands this more than any other company.

Seems like this thread is dead

Yet another spy shot, and this time with a rear rack in place, looks sturdy at least from the picture.

KTM has a wide stable of actual off-road bikes to draw from, and yet all they can manage for the huge Indian market is a slightly warmed-over Duke with more(!) bodywork, a new headlight, and faintly-knobbier tires? Why not stuff a torque-biased version of the 390 motor into a 350EXC-F frame? Add some lights, gauges, a battery, and swap the tires for Conti TKC-80s? At least then it might look like it's related to the 690.

                        KTM 390 adventure spyshots

What was expected to make debut at the 2018*EICMA*Show in Milan, Italy, has now been spotted in India for the first time. These are the first spy shots of the 2019 KTM 390 Adventure based on the new gen Duke 390.

KTM, which normally shows off concept bikes at EICMA and followed by a production version the next year, deviates from this normal practice with the KTM Adventure 390. The bike is set for launch in India next year, in 2019. The bike you see below, is in production ready format.

The KTM 390 Adventure was one of the great teases of 2018. After the collective hopes of a nation were let down when there was no sign of the bike at the 2018 EICMA show in Milan, we shut down any expectations of seeing more of this machine till 2019. But with just one week of the year remaining, spy images have emerged that show the all new motorcycle testing in India!

For starters, the bike spotted doesn't look too far from production ready. This is fitting, going by the usual standard of seeing early prototype KTMs first emerge in Europe and then later stage development and fine tuning test mules running in India. Clearly, the 390 Adventure is now in the latter stages of development.

Visually, the bike appears quite similar to the test prototype that was spied in Europe a few months ago. The front end gets the trademark LED headlamp split down the middle by an aluminum structure that also functions as a heat sink. Whether this is the exact same lamp as the one on the current-gen 390 Duke remains to be confirmed, but it does appear that way. The light resides is a larger housing, above which lies a fairly sizeable windscreen that should provide good wind protection, but without blocking it all out entirely either. The front mudguard appears to neatly cover the fork seal area, which should protect it against dirt and dust.

While we can't be certain just yet, it is highly likely that this bike is running on a 19-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear alloy wheel . That means tubeless tyres. The tread pattern is quite blocky and it appears to be an-off type tyre, but we aren't quite sure of the make and model just yet.

Moving over to the fork, it retains the offset spindle seen on the first prototype and is very likely to offer more suspension travel than the Duke's. How much more is hard to tell, but an interesting thing we can spot in the image is an red adjuster of sorts at the top of the fork. Now, this could be an adjuster that is on the prototype bike for the engineers to quickly tweak the set-up on the go as development progresses and they lock down on a final tune
The other possibility is that it could be that the 390 Adventure will be the first bike in the segment to offer some level of front suspension adjustability, even if that is just for preload, if not compression and rebound damping as well. We're excited to see how this particular area pans out.

The switchgear appears to be the same as the current gen 390 Duke, as do the mirrors and indicators, but the handle bar does look a little taller and wider. It's hard to tell from this angle, but it's quite likely that the full colour TFT display on the Duke will find its way to this bike as well. Over at the side, the bike instantly appears much longer than the Duke, which will come as a relief to bigger riders. The tank doesn't seem much larger, but it could hold a litre or two more than the Duke's 13.4 litre capacity. The bodywork along the sides is protected by a metal crash guard and there's a belly pan under the engine as well, but it's not clear whether this is a plastic or metal unit.

What is clearly different is the entire rear bolt-on subframe that is longer and less raked upwards than the Duke. The pillion seat appears spacious and the rider seat curves upwards into the fuel tank, which should help make it easier for the rider to slide their weight forward when required off-road. The footpegs are set in a lower and less aggressive setting than the Duke and they run rubber tops over toothy metal pegs underneath - another nod to some off-road aspirations after the shape of the rider seat. While it does look similar, the swingarm could be longer for this application. Finally, there are two sizeable grab rails on either side, but nothing in the form of a luggage rack - this may be sold as an accessory.

As for the engine, it is quite certainly going to be the same 373.2cc motor in the 390 Duke that makes 44hp and 37Nm, although it may be tuned differently for this application, at least in terms of final drive gearing, if nothing else. What does look different is the exhaust system which is larger than the one on the Duke or RC 390.

So when can we expect this bike? Well, it's easy to build castles in the air as has been the case so far. However, going by past example, it's quite possible that the 390 Adventure will stick to the standard KTM launch schedule for India and we may see a launch by sometime mid next year

We do expect to hear more about this from the company sometime in early 2019. When it does arrive, it's reasonable to expect a Rs 30-40,000 increase over the 390 Duke, which could put it in the Rs 2.8-3 lakh zone, which is still a good Rs 50,000 less than what would be its nearest rival, the BMW G 310 GS.

For now, we can tell you to expect a road-biased ADV, but one that that will still have the chops to take on a fair bit of mucking around in the dirt as well. It is a KTM after all, and their products are generally more focused than the competition. The wait has formally begun.
