According to the application, there are radars, camera and other sensors that keep a watch on the motorcycles proximity. If the onboard computer detects a crash, it hits the brakes automatically. This setup is available on a host of modern cars these days but using the same system on motorcycles posts some obvious problems. If the brakes are slammed when the rider isn’t ready, a crash is imminent. Or maybe the rider falls off the bike which makes the situation even worse.

In order to tackle that, a variety of sensors checks if the rider is in the seat and holding onto both the bars. What’s really clever though is that there is a camera and a sensor which watches the rider’s face/eyes and checks if they’re aware of what’s happening. This follows lights on the dash or a quick short application of the rear brake that warns the rider about the impending brake action.

It seems to be next step in safety and there’s a lot of stuff of this sort coming our way. Ducati is also coming out with motorcycles fitted with radars (read about it here) which can be taken as an example. These steps seems essential if human-controlled vehicles are to safely share the roads with new self-driving cars, trucks and buses.
