They have signed an MOU with Andhra Pradesh government regarding setting up a plant there. Rajeev Mishra also told how they are trying to improve the manufacturing standards and making them stringent. It will further result in making the motorcycles more durable. According to him, the customers have welcomed the change.
If we take a look at their portfolio on offer in India, the whole line-up consists of cruisers. At first, they expected India to receive small-capacity cruisers with wide open arms. Soon after they realized that cruisers attracted more middle-aged customers rather than the young guns. So to cater to the needs of the young junta, UM is looking forward to diversifying their portfolio rather than pulling out of the cruiser segment altogether.
Keeping this in mind, two premium motorcycles are on the cards from UM. The first one being an Adventure Tourer motorcycle which is likely to be powered by a 223 cc mill. In the international markets UM does have an adventure tourer in their portfolio. It goes by the name UM DSR. It has the same 223 cc engine but churns out 15 hp and 20 nm of torque.
The second motorcycle is expected to be a Scrambler. It is expected to be powered by a more powerful motor but it will not exceed the 300 cc mark. They don’t have any Scrambler in their portfolio, not even in the International markets. They might develop one on their current platform.
UM is going to price these motorcycles very aggressively so we can expect that these motorcycles will not breach the 2 lakh mark. Earlier this year at the Auto Expo 2018, UM unveiled their electric motorcycle named UM Thor. It garnered a lot of attention among the enthusiasts. But Rajeev Mishra thinks that India is not ready yet to embrace electric bikes. Reason? Price. Batteries are very expensive and India doesn’t have any supplier either who could supply bike spec lithium-ion batteries. Even if they launch it, it’s supposed to have a price tag of Rs 9 lakh. They are waiting for the technical feasibility and prices to go down a bit as well.
Thor aside, would you like to see an Adventure tourer and a Scrambler from UM’s stable?
