  • Bajaj gets patent for SnS

NEW DELHI: Pune-based Bajaj Auto today said it has received patent for its invention -- multi-spring vehicle shock absorber -- used in its motorcycles, with which it hopes to counter cheap Chinese copycats.

The Indian Patent Office has granted the company its "SNS" invention with patent no. 234044 on May 1, 2009, the company said in a statement.

"Essentially, this invention comprises use of at least two spring elements disposed in parallel arrangement over a damper body in a vehicle shock absorber to share vehicle/ rider load and provide superior riding comfort compared to conventional single spring shock absorbers," Bajaj Auto Vice-President Business Development S Ravikumar said.

Bajaj Auto has applied for patent in several countries for this unique technology and is taking necessary steps to counter the menace of Chinese manufacturers unscrupulously marketing cheap copies of the technology in Nigeria (as "NeXus" brand motorcycle) and in Kenya and Uganda (as "Nebula" brand motorcycle), the statement added.

This technology was first introduced on [URL="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/News-By-Industry/Auto/Bajaj-gets-patent-for-multi-spring-shock-absorbers/articleshow/4529178.cms#"]Bajaj CT 100 in July 2005 and subsequently in other models such as Discover, XCD, Platina, and Boxer-S. Until March 31, 2009, Bajaj has manufactured and sold over five million motorcycles with this technology in India and foreign markets, it said.

The patent application was filed on June 10, 2005 and it expires on June 9, 2025.

I guess a gimmick. If it was that effective Why isn't it being used in Bajaj's premium bikes?

I guess they are cheaper solution to nitrox gas shox, if not at par but better then conventional ones thats why they are used in cheaper bikes of bajaj.

SnS is a cheaper alternative to achieve the similar kind of suspension quality as given by triple rated springs.Basically in SnS there are 2 springs one of which is double rated and while the other one is single rated sprung in such a way to work like a triple rated spring.

Why this is done?-Triple rated springs are costly so to give similar kind of suspension feel to the commuter class at a lesser cost feel they have created SnS.

Now I have no idea whether it gives similar comfort as a triple rated spring or not.Never rode a SnS wala bike.

Here you go, now Bajaj has one more reason after twin spark to file lawsuit against other competing manufacturers . Way to go!

                  I love bajaj Patents...

Any how coming to SNS, I had done lots of driving with SNS on Platina, Can say that there is any hardly difference between the Convetional shox and SNS. Well...Another marketing trick...

                  So..Whats next?

I guess they have already patented it under DTS-Si when the XCD was introduced

                      All brands have marketing gimmicks.

Bajaj calls it DTS-Si , Hero Honda calls it ATFT

At the end of the day, it s all about money for them. Doesnt make any difference to us

The SnS equipped Platinas were not very great over the regular HH's. This was my initial observation. Once in 2008 me & my Friend went to his cousin's place on his 1998 Spelndor that clocked 1.4L KMs by then. His cousin has a new Platina that clocked less than 200 KMs. We had to go on a little not so smooth road with some patches here n there. I was riding the Splendor & my friend was pillion on Platina... he stopped the bike and came back onto Splendour after abt 5 mins saying it is too bumpy. On return I rode the Platina and the other two guys on Splendor... it was harsh on my back... the damping is not soft.

I even found a Discover 125 with SnS to be a bit bumpy compared to my Victor set for hard setting on shocks.

However, the Nitrox filled Pulsar shocks are very nice for a comfortable ride and if I have to vote as a commuter I would vote for them over many others.

Do my experiences match with others'?

@hydbiker : True w.r.t Splendor and Platina, I'll have to completely agree with you. Munjal-Showa springs are best in the business (Hero Group), in fact earlier Kawasaki Bajaj bikes (Boxers and Calibers) had Showa springs and were on par with HH bikes when it comes to suspension. Bajaj sacked them to save money I guess and invented cheaper/insignificant SnS.

Honda also calls them 'super sprint'....and 'power start'...

Anyways, SNS do just a bit better job than the regular shockups...
and there is nothing wrong in getting a thing patented no matter how small it is....!

Bigger and more experienced counterparts must also have done the same during the time they were inexperienced....!

and it in fact feels good to see the term "Indian" in the patents book....!
