• Speeding on Yamuna Expressway: 21,527 drivers may lose their licence

Are you speeding on Yamuna Expressway? Beware: Your license will be suspended for speeding and violations.

The transport department of Gautam Budh Nagar has listed 21,527 drivers violating the speed norms thrice or more between 1st of April to 4th of July on the Yamuna Expressway.

To bring down the road accidents and violations, the district administration and the transport department had joined to take necessary actions and also recommended the respective authorities to suspend their license.

Every vehicle's speed will be recorded by a software installed at the Jewar Toll Plaza. 100 kmph is the speed limit for the small & medium vehicles. 60 kmph for heavy vehicles.

It was shocking to the district administrations where over 1.3 lakh speeding offenses had been recorded in the last two months. 1,33,590 in June and 1,72,000 in May. On average more than 5,000 offenses per day.

Speaking on this, Mr. BN Singh, District Magistrate, Gautam Budh Nagar says, “For the first two offences, we fine the vehicle owner. However, for a third violation, we initiate cancellation of driving licences under the Motor Vehicles Act. To deal with vehicles from outside UP, we will take the help of the ARTO department and the police of the state concerned to track the owner of the offending vehicle and fine them.

In May, a total of 1,72,000 violations were recorded whereas in June, a total of 1,35,590 violations were recorded, which shows a dip of 23% in one month. Similarly, a total of 76 accidents in April, 65 accidents in May and 61 accidents in June were registered on the expressway, showing a decreasing trend in the number of accidents."

May be it's a desperate measure as a result of the widely circulated video recording of a accident involving a Porsche and a Swift Dezire.

That accident wasn't on the Yamuna Expressway.

Also a vehicle doesn't have a driving licence. It has an RC!

If they have caught a vehicle speeding 3 times, how do they know it was the same driver?
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Re: Speeding on Yamuna Expressway: 21,527 drivers may lose their licence

Last Monday, I and my wife were on our way to dropping her at office.. Noida Greater Noida Expressway was jam packed towards Sec 135.. It is never this packed usually! I immediately told my wife that this traffic is due to some accident.. after filtering through about 1km in the heavy traffic, We noticed there was a pileup of 5 cars.. Wondering what were they doing driving so close to each other.. Even on this expressway, the so called racers test their cars limit (I am no exception - Done once to test my Ninja).. I can imagine on the Yamuna Expressway..

But like at what The Monk has pointed out, how will they find out if the drivers weren't the same.. It will be the owner of the car who will be penalized..

These things will happen only in India ! That too in a express highway !

They will probably hold the owner responsible to get the drivers details from the owner. If not impound the car ?!
Even regular speed cam take pics and send the receipt to the registered owners address(and posted online) and he is responsible for clearing it (at least that's how it works here in Hyderabad)
And driving license is provided by the state but valid across India. Not sure if they have a centralized database.. so it is very much possible that one person has a license from a different state or maybe even multiple licenses (from different states).
Until these things are going to be centralized, it will be difficult to implement a proper mechanism to penalize folks. Apart from that we all know how well these 'rules' are enforced (at the whims and fancies of the agencies )

every talks about maximum speed limit but there should be a minimum speed limit too

Hi All,
This might be a silly question, but still i wanted to discuss it here.
What about night driving, are these speed camera compatible in night?

Enforcing traffic laws in India is like Scotland trying to put the Loch Ness Monster on the endangered species list - it's essentially a fantasy, or an exercise in creative writing.

More helpful would be how much bribe money you need to carry to make the cops go away. Because, let's all be quite honest here, that's how things really work on the street level. The cops stop you, threaten to impound the bike, blah blah blah and enjoy their power trip. Eventually the discussion leads to "pay me X amount in cash and you can simply go." The nicer / flashier your car / bike is, the more likely you are to be carrying some of that sweet cash for some chai.

So if the article was blunt and honest, it should read "Expect a higher likelihood that you'll be hassled by cops on Yamuna Expressway, especially if you have a sweet ride. The end."

Also, I haven't been there in a while now. Have they finally installed lights for night driving? You know, since they're so concerned about drivers' safety and all...

From what i understand, the cops won't be stopping you. A challan will be sent to address of the vehicle registration. That is what happened to a few friends of mine who had got caught on the speed camera on the Greater Noida Expressway.

What happens if the challan is not paid? Just curious.

It is right to penalize the owner of the car. It is owner's responsiblity to make sure that the vehicle registered on his name is in the right hands to start with. The fine should be hefty in few thousands of rupees. BUT I am pretty sure it wont happen in our country.
