Earlier, Volkswagen was reportedly planning to sell the Italian two-wheeler brand to compensate for the losses made due to the dieselgate controversy. The only question left to be answered was, to whom?
We've heard of rumors at different times, of various companies to purchase Ducati, including Royal Enfield, Harley Davidson and Hero Motocorp. Guess what? Maybe these companies did have talks with VW at different times, but now there's an interesting revelation by Bajaj Auto.
KTM, in which Bajaj Auto has about 48% equity stake is said to be closing in on the Ducati brand, which is on the selling block. The announcement is likely to be made in the next two weeks.

Speaking at the 10th annual general meeting, Rajiv Bajaj, MD of Bajaj Auto said, “We are very close to finalising a very promising alliance, it’s not certain, that it will happen, but if it happens, it will open up enormous possibilities for the company. That is why we keep our money (cash on books) with us, so, once in a while, when an opportunity comes along, we are ready.”
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Volkswagen’s powerful labor unions is strongly opposing the sale of the Italian brand. Volkswagen group’s works council said in an e-mail, “Ducati is a jewel, the sale of which is not supported by the labor representatives on Volkswagen’s supervisory board.”
This news got mostly positive responses on social media.
While most are excited at this awesome prospect, a few people raise questions on the influence of this deal on Ducati's product quality and the future of the brand.
Naturally, it would be pragmatic to expect that Ducati's factory environment & suppliers should not be that adversely affected by the acquisition. A case study of Jagaur and Land Rover acquisition further clarifies that probably there's a lot more positive, than negative.
However, all this is, if this actually takes place... From the hints, we can only join the dotted lines, not announce anything loud and clear.
We shall, probably within the month of August, know what this was about, and whether this deal will go through or not.
