Fresh on the heels of Kawasaki announcing a recall on its ZX-10R front wheel comes word from Honda about a recall on its most popular sportbike, though this recall is far less serious.
Evidently, some CBR600RR owners in Europe have experienced a binding rear brake. A closer analysis has revealed a bolt on the rear brake linkage that is susceptible to corrosion which can cause the brake to stick.
"Under certain circumstances," reads an American Honda service bulletin, "the pushrod and/or the tie rod bushing in the rear brake master cylinder can become corroded thereby effecting rear brake function."
The recall affects all 2003/2004 CBR600RRs sold in the U.S., even though no bikes sold in North American have been affected. All the cases thus far have been reported in Europe. Speculation is that the all-weather Euro riders get their bikes cruddier, inducing corrosion. To be on the safe side, American Honda will replace the affected part at no charge to owners.
The potential issue is solved by removing silver-colored lock-nut bolt on the heim joint behind the right-side footpeg and replacing it with a gold-colored bolt, presumably anodized to resist corrosion.
It's anticipated that notification letters to CBR600RR owners will start going out next week. Replacement parts are already at some dealers.
