  • KTM 390 Adventure launched in India: Price Rs. 2.99L Ex-S.

KTM 390 Adventure, the Orange brand's entry into the emerging adventure motorcycles market in India, has been launched. The recent years have witnessed an increasing trend in adventure touring and the interest in outdoor exploration is on the rise.

    Press Release:

The 390 Adventure has been conceptualized to address this trend and has been purpose-built for adventure travel while being a great ride for city use as well. The bike features an enhanced suspension with 170mm of wheel travel in the front and 177mm of wheel travel in the rear, knobby tyres for offroad use, high ground clearance of 200mm, extendable windshield and a protective bash plate.

Visually similar to the championship-winning KTM-450 Rally, the bike derives much from KTM’s rich legacy in Rally Racing in terms of chassis, profiling & several specs such as a larger fuel tank, ergonomics & wind protection to ensure a steady, safe & easy ride in corners and on the street.

The KTM 390 Adventure is aimed squarely at motorcyclists who desire a bike to handle short and long tours alike, traversing tarmac roads as well as all kinds of offroad stretches like gravel, slush, water crossing or sand. The bike builds on the versatility of the KTM 390 Duke Engine - A state-of-the-art DOHC single cylinder head technology - derived from KTM´s high-performance race models and electronics such as EFI and ride by wire resulting in 43 Hp of Power and 37 Nm of Torque.

The most stunning aspect of the 390 Adventure is the set of first in class electronics or rider aids which have been so far limited only to the litre-class superbikes. The Electronic Control Unit or ECU controls a host of electronic aids like the lean-angle sensitive Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC) which allows for better traction on dirt & loose gravel surfaces, Cornering ABS which provides for a safer and sharper ride through the twisties, Offroad ABS for better braking on low traction surfaces, and Quickshifter+ for smooth clutchless up and downshifting, all nicely displayed and relayed by the full-color TFT display. These aids work seamlessly to ensure a feeling of optimal control and come into play in the trickiest of the situations.

KTM sees a strong opportunity for Adventure390 to create and grow the adventure motorcycles segment n India. The current offerings in the market are either underpowered or struggling with basic technology and reliability issues.

    KTM 390 Adventure Highlights

    ● State-of-the-art DOHC Engine with Electronic Fuel Injection & Ride-by-wire throttle response delivering 43 Hp of Power & 37 Nm of Torque.

    ● Lightweight Steel Trellis frame with KTM’s signature die-cast, Open lattice swingarm offering precise stiffness & excellent flex characteristics.

    ● 43 mm open-cartridge upside-down WP APEX front forks with 170 mm of travel.

    ● High-quality gas assisted WP APEX rear shock having 177 mm of travel with progressive spring and preload adjustment.

    ● Cutting edge twin channel braking systems featuring Cornering ABS & Offroad ABS by Bosch.

    ● Quickshifter+ for smooth clutchless up and down-shifting.

    ● Motorcycle Traction Control with lean angle sensitivity.

    ● Multifunctional dashboard with full-colour TFT display is bright and clear.

    ● Larger fuel tank with 14.5L capacity.

    ● LED headlight and LED daytime running lights.

Speaking on the occasion Sumeet Narang, President (Probiking) at Bajaj Auto Ltd. said “KTM has nurtured a base of over 2.5 lac biking enthusiasts in the last 7 years through it’s Duke and RC range, offering the technology and performance they had never seen before. The Adventure biking segment in India is starting to pick up steam over the last few years, backed by a widespread motorcycle touring culture. With the new KTM 390 Adventure, loaded with a host of first-in-class features like Cornering ABS, Offroad ABS, lean-angle sensitive Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC) and Quickshifter+, we believe KTM will play a pivotal role in building the adventure motorcycle segment in the country.”

The bike will go on sale from January 2020 across all KTM showrooms.

Re: KTM 390 Adventure launched in India: Prices to be announced soon

Why didn’t Mr.Narang say “you guys won’t get adjustable suspension” for the domestic market while the international market does.

I’ll continue to enjoy riding my D390.

I guess, Keeping in mind the price sensitivity of the Indian Market, they tried to offload all possible features to keep the pricing as sharp as possible.
They definitely don't want to go the BMW baby GS way.
With all these keeping it around 30K premium to the Naked 390 seems possible. Maybe that's why they have not yet launched the 250 ADV yet. don,t want any cannibalism among the same brand.

though it will be interesting at what price they launch it. Waiting for another month for the price seems tough.

After watching and reading the First Ride reviews yesterday,

Looks like they've squandered a big opportunity once again.

Quickshifter is a big gimmick and does not work properly.

Since no change in gearing, they're continuing the infamous weak bottom end of the 390 engine here as well. On a ADV that's just blasphemy.

Since you gotta rev the nuts out of it in offroad the traction control intervenes unnecessarily and you gotta scroll into many menus and click buttons to switch it off. But TC switches ON once again, when you switch off and start the engine making the whole procedure annoying!

Since the forks are not adjustable it seems to get very fidgety and stiff in off road gravel sections and bottoms out with heavier riders.

            So it ain't a ADV.

It's just a more Grand Touring oriented version of the Duke.

The heat seems to have reduced significantly due to bigger radiator and dual fan setup.

Alloy wheels are stronger and seem to be abuse friendly.

Since the wheelbase is longer, cruising at higher triple digits is more stable than the standard Duke.

It has not lost it's fun agility around corners in spite of 19inch wheel at the front.

Very friendly and easy to ride for taller folks who are above 6 feet 2inches but sadly gotta tip toe and master the art of balancing for riders below 5 feet 8 inches due to tall 855mm stock seat..

In conclusion it's not gonna rock the segment, might just be a niche.. Better to wait for the 2021 Duke 490 Twins

            Cheers!

There are road focused Advs also, like tiger 800 xr for road biased and xc for off road biased. The 390 adv is a road biased adv, should be more comfortable for two up touring than Duke. I feel there is too much electronics for a entry motorcycle, but otherwise for a newbie who feels Himalayan is under powered, this could be an option

                  I mostly agree with you.

I was expecting a lower power output in pursuit of low end torque, something like the 35/39 bhp Dominar engine.
Since they didn't modify the engine powerwise, I had the thinking that most probably they'll modify the gearing, shortening the first 3 gears, or at least the final gearing by a little margin, to reduce the 'low end is weak' feeling a little. Sadly not.

Traction Control is just a safety consideration at best. I still remember, Duke 390 could've been launched in 2013 with a MRF Revz C tyre, but they didn't. Instead they gave a tyre which doesn't even slip while leaning on a wet road. Bajaj won't handle out unmanageable performance in the hands of the common customer. As long as it saves a crash, it has done its job.
For the bikers though, the constant turning off might be a trouble. Quickshifter was somewhat unnecessary though.

Seat is also way taller than expectations for the Indian market.

I think they must choose to upgrade the seat and gearing at the earliest. These are pretty easy things comparatively, they can work on it right away, as opposed to an engine tune up increasing torque, which might take time and even break stuff further... It can be made a great city+highway+off road bike.

KTM India official website does say that there will be lower seat configuration accessory, hope it'll be priced sensibly and made available soon.

Not really, the amount of bs that came from his mouth was cringy. Is this what 'Critical Analysis' is then god help the 'Indian Biking Community'! [emoji23]
"Adv motorcycles should not come with alloy wheels", I don't know where is he coming from with this one. For the type of off roading the bike is meant to do alloy wheels are more than sufficient. Traction control is not for beginners yaada yaada and Cornering ABS is gimmicky! Passing off comments without riding the bike is very easy, i knew that Indians would think of this as dirt bike when they released that Adv 390 video.
