In what comes as a big relief to owners who purchased the last BS4 vehicles, the Supreme Court on Thursday allowed the registration of BS-IV vehicles that were sold in March this year, but could not be registered due to the nationwide lockdown before the March 31 deadline.
As per a report by IANS, a bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said that all registrations on e-portal, including temporary registrations, are allowed. However, the relaxation won't be applicable to Delhi-NCR.
"We cannot be allowing registration of vehicles in Delhi-NCR. This is not applicable to Delhi NCR," said the news agency quoting the SC.

Previous developments:
* In 2018, New Delhi became the first city in India to be selling BS6 fuel.
* On March 27, the Supreme Court had passed an order allowing dealers to sell 10% of unsold BS4 stock for 10 days after the lockdown was lifted.
* On June 15, the court put a ban on the sale and registration of BS4 vehicles after it found that the dealers had violated its earlier order.
* Last month, the court had extended the ban on the registration of BS4 vehicles.
BS4 vs BS6: If you had a choice?
The BSVI engine is relatively cleaner than the BSIV engine leading to lower combustion. Add new components to the exhaust system and it reduces the overall performance of the vehicle to a certain extent, although not that significant. That said, vehicle manufacturers are developing engines which offer a balance between performance, efficiency and emissions.
The difference between BSIV and BSVI cars’ fuel efficiency is minimal. A slight decline in mileage although not significant.
Due to this, an enthusiast, a commuter and anyone for that matter, has all the reasons to go for BS4 vehicle. Except.. that we all breathe air...
