    After unveiling the 2021 MT-09, the Iwata marquee has taken the wraps off the 2021 Yamaha MT-07. While the former got a near-complete overhaul, the new MT-07 makes do with much milder updates.



    There was a lot of buzz surrounding the new MT-07 for quite a while. The magnitude of changes on the 2021 MT-09 further raised the expectations. Expectations that perhaps fell on deaf ears. The primary change is, of course, the Euro5 compliance in addition to some refinements all over.

    Now, the MT-07 has been a great motorcycle on its own. The middleweight twin has a decent following around the world but we reckon that the overhaul of its bigger siblings is more to blame than Yamaha themselves.





    But then, we believe that the motorcycle could have used some more substantial changes. It is mostly because of the competition which is starting to heat up in the middleweight-twin class. With the Aprilia RS 660 and the Triumph Trident 660, the class is already being contested hotly. The imminent arrival of the Tuono 660 is bound to raise the game further.

    Coming back to the 2021 Yamaha MT-07, the changes include a revised intake, exhaust, ECU and fuel injection system. That said, despite now being Euro5 compliant, the streetfighter has only lost one horsepower which means that the rear tyre has to put around 72 horses on the road now. On that note, new Michelin tyres are also one of the changes.



    Quite a few manufacturers have practised bumping up the displacement but the MT-07 retains its 689cc mill. But then, the fact that Yamaha has been able to keep almost all of the power without making radical changes to the engine is commendable. But then, there is nothing in this world such as too much power... only too much money.

    Moving on, the front brakes have been improved on the 2021 Yamaha MT-07 with the bike now getting twin 298mm discs instead of the 282 mm ones that worked to drop the anchor on the previous generation. Predictably, the styling has also been revised which takes quite a few cues from the new MT-09. Love it or hate it, it does make the motorcycle look a little more aggressive.



    There is a new LCD dash on offer and also, a wider handlebar which is touted to make the riding position even more comfortable working in harmony with the new seat and the new tank. The wet weight is being quoted to be 184 kg which is around a kilo and some change more than before.

    While the Indian market does not seem to interest Yamaha when it comes to the MT-07, the pricing is also something commendable as the MT-07 is only $100 pricier than the last model. $7,599 does not seem to be too much to ask in return of a decent streetfighter from Yamaha.
