  • KYMCO SuperNEX is an electric supersport with sound and a GEARBOX!

    EICMA being EICMA had quite a collection of motorcycles (and3-wheelers) but this, this amazed us to no extent. KYMCO? The name ring a bell? It’s a Taiwanese firm that builds scooters and EVs. It partners with Kawasaki and BMW to make engines and share technology. Recently they tied up with Twenty Two Motors from India and brought the FLOW on the IONEX platform, the usual deal. But at EICMA, they showed an electric supersport project and it is stunning. The KYMCO SuperNEX might very well be the hottest thing in EICMA.



    The KYMCO SuperNEX is a very serious motorcycle with top shelf components from Brembo and Ohlins. An alloy frame, Oz wheels and Metzeler Racetec tyres are equally impressive. It looks fantastic but… it’s an electric bike nonetheless. The usual drawbacks like lack of gearbox and practically no sound (excluding the whine and the sound from gears, chains and tyres etc.). Except, that is not the case with the KYMCO SUperNEX. This motorcycle boasts of a six-speed gearbox and a tunable audio system! I.e. you can customize the sound that the bike makes. These are features unique for an electric bike.

    Most of the electric bikes do not come with a gearbox or make the sound that we all love. KYMCO states that these two things are a vital part of a motorcycle and the overall riding experience and thus, they decided to do something about it. They have added a 6-speed gearbox to the SuperNEX powerplant. It can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 2.9s, 0-200 kmph in 7.5s and 0-250 kmph in 10.9s. Those numbers are not shabby at all. And then the sound, KYMCO calls the motor an Active Acoustic Motor, which makes a unique sound when running, and can also be tuned by the owner. That is just brilliant.

    Now, apart from all that, the KYMCO SuperNEX looks stunning too. So, this electric motorcycle has everything one can ask for. Brilliant chassis, lots of power and stunning looks. So all’s good in the paradise? Well, the only problem at the moment is that we have no word on anything, be it the exact power output, charging, battery capacity, weight or… availability. But we do hope that we get all that soon or better yet, a ride of this mad little electric supersport.

    Sounds like a Mixie at high speed, but the times they show for 100, 200 are nothing short of astounding. The battery for this kind of power should pack a serious punch and that means it is almost like sitting on a bomb.

      I think this is the next step we needed from electric bikes. The performance is astounding, the sound brings the feel & the gearbox keeps the rider involved.

        Don't agree less with the bomb things..!

        But I can't complain about it, I own a Dominar.. And 13ltrs, is enough for a good explosion...

          The future is here. All i need on a motorcycle is a gearbox.

          Now all that is left is something that can aid tourers. It is still impossible to tour on a electric bike.

            Yes you can definitely tour on an EV bike. The above bike has a combined city and highway range of 129kms with pure highway range being 93kms. With regenerative braking you can go a bit more possibly. All you need to do is just find charging spots on your trip and you are all set.

              Yes you can definitely tour on an EV bike. The above bike has a combined city and highway range of 129kms with pure highway range being 93kms. With regenerative braking you can go a bit more possibly. All you need to do is just find charging spots on your trip and you are all set.
              129km is a distance people sometime ride for breakfast, and I won't even be able to come back on this.

              EVs are no good for us, as long as we don't get instantaneous refill like petrol engines. We do over 500 KM a day for a number of occasions. And the range any motorcycle is more than 400km anyday.

              How ever, a gearbox is a must.. Just loved the idea.

                        I have a feeling we can't have it all. Anyone thinking of EVs, just be ready for some compromises and you'll probably be happy....

                        Batteries haven't yet fully evolved.
                        But the Lamborghini edition of a particular Oppo Phone has VOOC... In short, a 3400 Mah battery gets fully charged at 35 minutes. That's it.
                        And its available in market, as opposed to just 'being a concept'. That's the typical time we do our breakfast or so. Of course, implementation on a vehicle will be tricky, due to higher voltage needs, equipment, compatibility with existing infrastructure, etc.


                        I don't want to even mention concepts. I've heard it all, supercapacitor based battery, charging in 1 minute 40 seconds, and what not.... But, just a concept for now...


                        Abroad, Lightning, a company is doing very well in terms of range, with their bike LS218 being no slouch either...

                        So, we'll eventually get there. Lithium ion plant is about to open in Gujarat, India. Costs will go down. Concepts will enter production.


                        But we'll still have to compromise something or the other to gain something. Range anxiety might still trouble us. That won't change. not in near future.

                          Yeah, nothing like stuck in the middle of nowhere with a faulty battery that showed incorrect range value.

                          I would trust my conventional engine for touring and a EV for daily use.

                          We are yet to know how the concept of gearbox will feel on an EV, but one thing for sure, it can be used generate mamoth torque for the launch. How ever, EVs does not essentially need a gearbox. I believe the box is there mostly to stay as close as possible to the petrol counterpart in the riding dynamics and feel.

                              This is what I meant by control..
                              I can understand why a Transmission is required in a vehicle with petrol or diesel engine as the Torque is not spread out throughout the rev range.

                              What purpose does it serve in an EV? Why does the Regera, the Teslas, ZeroMotorcycles not have a transmission on board?
