  • India-Scientists develop F-Cell motorcycle

Ahmedabad-- As part of India's hydrogen energy programme, scientists have built a hydrogen motorcycle which would soon be tested in Delhi, Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources said today.

The country had made several achievements in the area of hydrogen energy and had come up with efficient production methods in laboratory conditions and successfully demonstrated utilisation in motorcycles and three wheelers, Dr S K Chopra, senior advisor at the Central Ministry said.

Besides, success had also been achieved in biological production of hydrogen from organic waste and bio gas, Chopra said at the plenary in the 92nd Indian Science Congress.

The demonstartion of the hydrogen motorcycle had been done in Varanasi and it would soon be demonstrated in Delhi, he added.

Scientists are working in the area of fuel cells in which hydrogen and oxygen combine to produce electricity and water. Japn and the US were leading in this area, he said.

Stating there was an urgent need to move towards cleaner energy resources and technologies, Chopra said this would reduce environmental pollution and promote human health.

Utilisation of solar energy was a good option but its utilisation in all its forms has many inherent problems which prevents its use on large scale as a substitute to the existing fossil fuels, he explained.

The world was now moving towards a solar hydrogen system and many countries were now working towards the transition to the hydrogen economy, he said adding India could show the way in this frontier energy technology area as it was already working on a hyrogen energy road map and programme to bring about transition to new solar hydrogen economy.

@Booo- what else will happen if compressed hydrogen gets out into the air?! with a little spark?!

Its highly inflammable man....heard of the Zundapp balloons which used to float due to hydrogen?

Yes i,ve seen many programmes on Discovery channels and many German and American car makers had already done it and they are using fuel cells to absorve the Hydrogen Gas as its very dangerous in Liquid or gas state. But after absorved by fuel cells its very user friendly even if you put match direct to fuel cell it wont burn also the perfomance is very good as compared to normal gasolin driven engines and the by product is nothin but Mineral water. But till date i havent heard anything from indian scientists.

the main MAIN MAIN use of a Bike is for pleasure. if you buy it at a cost of SBK. yuo mite like to rip it. dunt you? Do you think fuel cel bikes can beat IC engines? in any FACTOR>?

including polution?? cos.. Making Hydrogen is a process which polutes more than Ic engines do. Waht do we call this then? usless technology?

I don't think so .For making Hydrogen there is a process called Electrolysis. You study that in ur school.it consumes electricity.H2O is split into hydrogen and oxygen.the wanted element can be stored or released. And as water is used for the process,it can virtually never get depleted.Remember our planet is 70% covered with water. It will be there for next 1000 Crore years even if we use it 10 times to our oil consumption today.Cool guys.By that time we will definitely find other sources of water in this universe.
Or who knows whether men will survive untill that time?
Any way,the by product of the process is just 100 % pure water and not ant hazardous waste.

The Zeppelin airships used HELIUM which is highly imflammable - NOT Hydrogen.

As far as I know, Hydrogen is an inert gas. It is not imflammable. The only way it can explode is if the compressed hydrogen tank develops a leak. And the resulting explosion would NOT result in a fireball.

Hafeexus : You have it completely the other way round. Helium is completely inert and hydrogen is highly inflammable, any high school chemistry student knows that.

Hydrogen WILL explode when exposed to aflame or a spark, even if it is in a very small quantity. However, fuel cells are not dangerous since hey have adequate precautions taken.

dude do u really think all da car & bike mfgs who are working on f-cell fuel are idiots and won't have already figured a way of saeguard from such things ?

a big example is that Daimler Chrysler India is also bringing a demo car based on f-cell in india, have a look at http://www.fuelcellsworks.com/Supppage1785.html

f-cell is considered to be one of the best alternate fuel for da future.
