  • Harley may assemble motorcycles in India

Looks like Harley-Davidson Motor Co. is considering a proposal to assemble its bikes in India instead of importing completely built bikes to take advantage of the lower duties. Hmm..... I am all ears for this!

I support this effort. You see, demand of such bikes may be less, but it is there and is increasing. It might sell 100 units, but the same number is constant, & will increase later on.

And finally, this will give the company more control over the price, which may have a bigger profit margin too, compared to CBU's.

        Thanks for the approval!

I would really love to see harleys being assembled in India. Not only will it provide us with cheap torque monsters for the masses but will improve over all tech knowledge and know how about motorcycle. Plus not to mention competition on home grounds will improve over local brands like RE by proding them for better products!

IMHO, it should be little more than 3L. The news says, "By assembling the bikes in India, the levies could come down to as low as 30%". So this means, a 883L costs about $6999 which is 6.95L here. This means with a 50Rs $ conversion rate, the price here is around 3.5L & with 100% import duty its priced nearly 7L (actually 6.95). Now the same with 30% duty should work out to 4.5L.

I don't think this will lower the prices, this will just widen their margin.

I don't agree, for the following reasons:

                        1. HD India Chairman was clear that he is doing everything to make Harleys affordable. He wants sustainable sales & growth.

                        2. Earlier, many attempts were made by US to reduce taxes. Clearly shows their intention to capture Indian market, rather than sell 100 or 200 units.
They are here to stay. And that does require good Sales.

                        3. They can't just cheat us, by increasing margins this way. Press would be heavy on them like anything!
