  • Cleaner fuel for BS4 in 13 cities from 1st April

From the Times of India, 24th March 2010:

NEW DELHI: Cleaner, but costlier, Euro-IV standard petrol and diesel will be available from April 1 in 13 cities across the country, petroleum secretary S Sundareshan said in New Delhi on Wednesday.

At a function to mark the launch of the cleaner fuel, he said: "From April 1, Euro-IV standard fuel will be available in 13 cities in India". These cities will include Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore.

Sundareshan noted that the oil firms had made an investment of over Rs 40,000 crore to upgrade their refineries to produce the cleaner grade of petrol and diesel. This was likely to be onpassed to the consumer, he indicated.

The secretary said the Euro-IV petrol will cost 46 paise per litre more than Euro-III, while Euro-IV diesel will be 26 paise costlier.

Sundareshan added that oil firms were already facing a loss of Rs.70,000 crore this year as auto fuels and cooking gas were sold at highly subsidized rates.

          Petrol
Possible increase in octane number for new generation high compression engines. This should translate to better performance and mileage, only in those engines designed to use high quality fuel.

          Diesel
Possible increase in cetane number. This may translate into better performance and mileage.
Lower sulphur content. This will lead to lower smoke emissions.

you mean these fuels are ONLY for the higher octane petrol's?

anyway every fuel is the same once its adulterated by our friendly neighborhood pumps!

All petrol and diesel sold in those 13 cities will be bs4, irrespective of grade or brand. Whatever be the effects on performance, emissions will definitely reduce in all engines. Maybe by a bit, maybe by a lot, I can't say.

This is all towards a cleaner and greener INDIA and not the power or mileage of our bikes.

"Come April and we are set to step in a cleaner and greener India as April 2010 marks the enforcement of stricter emission norms as per recommendations of Dr. R. A. Mashelkar Committee for pollution control in India. The rule says that all the two wheeler (& 3 wheeler) vehicles manufactured and registered from 1st April 2010 must adhere to the new Bharat Stage III standards while 4 wheelers in the 13 prominent cities* of India will have to abide by Bharat Stage IV norms. According to the new regulations for 2 wheelers (BS III) emission of Carbon monoxide (CO) & hydrocarbons plus oxides of nitrogen have to be kept at 1.0 g/km from the earlier 1.5 g/km.

"Every company was running from pillar to post to get their technology abreast with the latest emission norms and Bajaj is the latest to become compliant to these stricter and better pollution norms. According to Bajaj their R&D team has been working very hard and long to make their engines comply to the new regulations and finally they have become BS III compliant and has even started manufacturing vehicles adhering to the new norms.
This marks a brighter day for all of us as we are the ones who need to ensure that we take care of our earth at the same time not compromising too much on our basic needs!

An executive from Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam) quoted, “We have a particular concern about the unavailability of the correct fuel from April 1. The current range of engines is tuned in such a way that they can handle both types of fuels (BS-II and BS-III). The next generation engine, of BS-IV, will be more tuned to handle BS-III than BS-II. If there is a sustained mismatch in fuel quality for about a month, then there will definitely be a very negative impact on performance. Most likely, there would be a knocking tendency while acceleration, much reduced fuel efficiency levels and a long-term impact on the life of the vehicle.”
The problem with the BS-IV compliant engines revolves around the high sulphur content present in different qualities of fuel available in the market and the new engines are not supposed to run on inferior quality fuel like the BS-II which has the highest sulphur content with 500 , in BS-III its 150 and in BS-IV it is nearly 50. Similarly if an engine is made to run on minimum octane level of 91 then it cannot run on 88 octane later and will face problems. Another problem that is likely to come up is the depletion of the life of the catalytic converter which is the device solely responsible for emission of harmless emissions, so if the life of the catalytic converter gets reduced then the harmful emissions will also increase.
Onboard Diagnostic (OBD) system helps the owner or the technician to keep a track of the state of health of the sub-systems installed and is designed to warn the driver in case of any problem. So if inferior quality fuel is made to enter the engine then the OBD system will trigger alarms repeatedly.
Siam’s officials also say that there is no estimation of the impact caused by lower grade fuel on the new BS-IV compliant engines and the damage will depend on many factors like how long or how often BS-II fuel is used and the driver’s habit of driving.
So, its more about Sulphur Content than Octane level. But still, Octane level is now upto 91 Octane.
