  • Nano Challenge - From Taj Mahal, India to Traflagar Square, London

A group of three people interested in adventure sports have now taken up a Nano Challenge. It includes driving the world’s cheapest car, Tata Nano, from Taj Mahal, India to Trafalgar Square, London. The idea behind the Nano Challenge is to raise money for the charity organisation International Disaster and Emergency Aid with Long Term Support or IDEALS.

    About IDEALS

It is a charity organisation whose members are mainly doctors and nurses. They risk their lives to save people in war zones, disaster struck areas or places struck with natural calamities. IDEALS provide equipment support, medical support and training to people struck with disasters or natural calamities.

Nearly 100 percent of the donation directly goes to the needy people and the whole team of IDEALS work professionally and free of charge to help people like those hit with Tsunami or Pakistan’s Earthquake.

    About the Nano Challenge

Nano Challenge is a self-funded trip where the three men have decided to raise the money for IDEALS. The whole idea has been the brainchild of Richard Lawson-Cruttenden and Jason Woodhams, from Albourne and Lee Shawyer from Brighton. They had initially planned to travel from Taj Mahal to Amritsar via Pakistan and onwards to London via Turkey and Iran. However, in the wake of the present political situation in the neighbouring countries, the current route includes travelling from Amritsar to Mumbai though still via Taj Mahal. The three Nano cars will be shipped from Mumbai to Dubai where the teams will pick up the cars and travel to Europe crossing the Arabian Gulf. The change of plans now means that the initial 12 days direct journey will take 14 days apart from the transit period of shipment of the cars to Dubai.

The entire team includes a total of 7 people who had originally planned to take up a back up Jeep but will now be travelling only via three Tata Nanos. The Nano models being used in the challenge are the same ones that have been designed for Indian roads and Indian traffic. The models have 12 inch wheels and 625cc engine.

The team remains fully equipped with necessary travelling survival equipments as well as back up fuel cans as Nano has only small fuel tank that can give run only up to 150 miles.

The team members expect to meet a maximum range of 65 kms per hours and intend to avoid night travelling till they reach Europe. Travelling through mountainous terrains will definitely be treacherous where the team expects to slow down on their speed. The whole journey also includes travelling via Paris for a little fun and adventure then travelling onwards via Dieppe, Newhaven, Brighton and Pavilion. The final destination is Traflagar Square in London with dinner at India Club at The Strand.

    In Conclusion

Tata Nano still remains the world’s cheapest car and Tata Motors is also planning to launch new variants of its ultra-cheap car, such as the Tata Nano Europa model which is expected to launch in Europe shortly. The journey through Europe will definitely give leverage to Tata Nano as it cruises along the European roads, while highlighting the excellent work that IDEALS has done for a number of unfortunate people.

              Yawn. Yet another charity globetrot!!

Why don't people do charity quietly?

I admire the likes of Steve Waugh in stark contrast to the Mumbai Indians' "show" of the underprivileged kids during a recent match.
