NEW DELHI: At a time when over two lakh people queue up to own a car for just over Rs 1 lakh, Japanese two-wheeler maker Suzuki has managed to

sell around 100 units of two of its super bikes in India for prices as high as Rs 12.5 lakh each.

The company is now planning to sell at least another 100 units of its two iconic super bikes- Hayabusa and Intruder -by the end of this fiscal.

"We have sold around 100 units of Hayabusa and Intruder in India since their launch in November, 2008. Our aim would be to sell another 100 units this fiscal," Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd (SMIPL) Vice President (Sales & Marketing) Atul Gupta told reporters here.

While Hayabusa is powered by a 1,340cc engine, Intruder is a 1,783cc bike. In contrast, Tata's Rs 1 lakh car Nano, for which 2.06 lakh people had made bookings, has a 623cc petrol engine.

SMIPL has reported a 33.42 per cent rise in its sales in June at 12,335 units compared with 9,245 units in the same month last year.

Gupta said the growth was mostly driven by its latest offering- GS150R- which was launched three months back.

"In the first three months, we have sold 14,000 units of the GS150R. Our target is to sell at least 50,000 units of the bike by March 2010," he said, adding that the company expects to maintain a 30-35 per cent growth on year-on-year basis.
Hope this encourages them to bring on their other performance bikes.

May other SBK companies look at the greed for superbikes here in India .In near future I hope we can witness other SBK companies like yamaha,Suzuki,Honda,KTM and other companies launch their bikes here in India, and give importance to Indian Market!

Well, I wasn't sure whether to create a new thread for this news, it was definitely a surprise from your side .

I wonder what Atul Gupta has to say now, as he was very skeptical of the sales of the big bikes.

Thats great news.. Selling 100 units of such high-priced bikes in just 8 months is no small achievement..

I wonder when the 400-600cc sport bikes will be here.. They sure have a market here, considering the fact that the next legally available performance bike after 220cc is 998cc!! & that too is pretty heavy on the pockets for most of us here.. & moreover, moving up from 220cc to 998cc is quite a big jump (in power), that not all can handle..
We definitely need the 400-600cc bikes, to help us graduate from the 220cc class to the litre class..
    Are the Babus listening!

The pleasure is when your rear wheel slides, and you bring it back; and when the front wheel lifts, you take your time bringing it back.
