If Hero follows through, it could mean a decent reduction in price to the end customer for big capacity bikes, wouldn't it?

Not really a news for people who want such bikes soon... is it?

And what name will they give to the venture? Hero Ducati? Hero Davidson?

LOL ; not surprised by the fact of "Hero" Honda; due to this naming conventions there's still a confusion as Splendour & Unicorn are from same manufacturer

Ah this is a surprise.. This will be essential in bringing the cost of big bikes & spares down if they are to at least assemble / manfacture key components. The current costs are ridiculous as tax amount seems to be more than the actual product itself.

The only fear that remains is quality control. While indian companies may acquire other companies in europe / us etc etc... maintaining the level of quality these manfacturers do will be tough. We can't have a bmw whose reliability is compromised for example. (ITs not like bmw's at 100% perfect, every company has a lemon here n there..)

And hopefully, while the manufacturing will take place in india, the product design, and control of the operations will not the desi effect. Really dont want to see a bmw with front wheel black and the rear red, nooo sir !

all - sane replies please :/

according to the article, Hero is talking ambitious, motorcycle development and expertise wise. But if this really happens, in the start its gonna be a venture something like bajaj-kawasaki's, where one (or later 2-3) model(s) is sold through desi company outlets and IKM saves money, time and labour, being new in Indian 2-wheeler industry, on deploying its own dealerships nationwide. In return, bajaj milking the shared brand recognition and value and probably fair amount of mullah as well.

It would be really interesting to see who plays for whom, in the upcoming dialogues between Hero and that one "come to daddy" superbike maker.

I have a friend working in Hero Motors, he's a mechanical engg like me.
He works on supervising a gear manufacturing unit for Harley Davidson for export purposes. They make the complete gearbox assembly.

He told me that Hero was doing this for a long time and has recently bagged an order from some other bike mnf, did not specify which.

This could be great, all they need to do is make the engines here and most of the cost reduces for us.

Edit: The quality is up to international standards. They have been doing this for a few years now and keep getting new contracts. So we need not worry there

I have in my not so 'distinct' memories..... Harley Davidson, when asked few years back (well before the recession) whether it would adopt the route followed by many other US companies to outsource the production to Asian countries (mainly China, Thailand or India) in order to be more competitive by reducing costs, replied that they would not do that as they want to ratain the tag of 'Made In America' for exclusivity and customer loyalty..... lets see what happens)

(cant give the source but it was a news in Times Of India, Delhi edition i think in 2006 or early 07, when there were talks of 'Harley for Mangoes')
