Bajaj closing gap with Hero in 100cc bikes
New Delhi: A rather interesting shift is happening in the motorcycles market. While Hero Honda retains the number one position in the 100cc segment with its Splendour and Passion brands, Bajaj Auto has begun snapping at its heels.Source: Bajaj closing gap with Hero in 100cc bikes - dnaindia.comTags: None

Actually, payeng is right in a way...Originally posted by nitrosatya View PostI don't think it is an obsession. A 100cc bike means everything to a lot of people in India. They can't afford anything bigger. Just for their commuting. And this market will not die anytime soon.
If you give this market a bike with Cost, Mileage, and Weight of a 100cc bike, but performance of a 125cc, it should be a win-win situation for all, right?
But, the commuter mindset just doesn't accept anything above 100cc. No matter what the features & advantages are...
PS: My dad's XCD still returns some 65-70 kmpl, and he does NOT regret purchasing it...---

This has happened many times with bajaj. They launch a commuter segment bike with plenty of features and at an attractive price tag. The bike shoots up the Bajaj sales chart for the first 6 months or so, then there comes the downward slope of the sales chart. Sometimes that model is even discontinuedOriginally posted by Satyamzma View Postit will come down in another 6 months and then Bajaj will launch a new discover

A few years back, when the CT100 was selling like hot cakes,I felt that bajaj would kick HH aside to regain the no.1 spot. But it was rather disappointing. Similar was the case with platina, discos, etc..
Dont know why happens. But every time this happens, it feels like a deja-vu....From variable Bhps to a constant 17.6 Bhp.

But this time, I don't see that happening.
Previously the CT100, Platina had "low pricing" as the USP.. which is never a good long term stategy. The promotions / ad campaigns (TV / Print Ads) were also quite aggressive.
But this time the Discover 100 seems to be selling on its merit, even when its priced "on-level or slightly more" than the Splendor.
That too with hardly any significant TV Ads.

The Brand Image is surely working it's wonders in this case as well as the Value-for-money tag.

Brand Image + the "Product" also
The new engine platform of the Discover 100 is quite solid and frugal well. Even the potent 4 Valve engine of the Pulsar 135LS shares the same platform.
The years of learning of Bajaj R&D is starting to show its muscle.

lets wait and watch payeng.. lets not jump onto conclusion...
PS - I seriously want somebody to give a tough time to HH. HH takes Indian people for granted.
Like the way Samsung, HTC and Apple are giving hard time to Nokia. Nokia took the world for granted. And see... they are in mess. With sales decreasing day by day. HH and Nokia are alike. have been riding on brand name for too long time.
Why Road Safety campaigns are not impacting people?

The Splendor is a 16 year old brand, the Passion a 9 year old one and are household names. Something quite similar to "Nokia" for entry level mobiles. Many were starting to believe that the Splendor/Passion fortress was impregnable.
Whatever chunk Discover has got out of the "Nokia" of our Indian motorcycles is therefore commendable. Having said that even then, overtaking Hero Honda in terms of sales would still be a big task. (I have been very much an entry level mobile user and its difficult for me to think other than Nokia..!!)
According to me TVS also had a very good chance to build a brand with its "Victor", but sadly instead of nurturing the brand it was allowed to fade away (products like Centra, Star, Flame took priority back then).

I think Bajaj needs to bring back Boxer in Indian market.. it had a great run in the rural market.. after Boxer, Platina failed in filling that gap. Beating HH in sales is certainly very difficult.. I don't see that's happening anytime soon. But with most of the bike makers turning their attention to 100 cc.. HH has tough fight in their hands, similar to what Maruti is experiencing after Ford Figo & VW polo.Let's bring down the monster of corruption to it's knees.. please visit http://ipaidabribe.com/
