  • Police unveil 2010 Harley Davidson

WOODSTOCK – City police have added a motorcycle to its fleet.

The leased 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle is to be used for traffic enforcement programs, escorts and general patrol.

"We currently deploy officers on foot patrol, bicycle patrol and, of course, cruiser patrol throughout the city," Woodstock Police Service Chief Rod Freeman said in a release Friday afternoon.
"The addition of the motorcycle to our fleet creates yet another versatile method of patrol that will benefit the community through higher police visibility and increased law enforcement."

The new motorcycle is the result of a 2006 survey showed traffic concerns, including impaired driving, speeding and aggressive driving, were important to city residents.

Three years ago the police created a traffic enforcement program where a constable and a cruiser were deployed to areas that have a high number of complaints.

Last month the Woodstock police issued statistics about collisions in the city and named the 10 worst intersections, with the junction of Dundas and Huron streets topping the list.

During a ten-year period, there was a total of 2,750 motor-vehicle collisions at 356 intersections in Woodstock, Freeman said.

"The flexibility provided by the motorcycle patrol allows officers to conduct traffic enforcement in areas where it is difficult to maneuver a police cruiser," Freeman said. "For example, any of the 10 traffic intersections recently identified by our service as being 'high collision' intersections."

Two officers and a supervisor have been equipped with motorcycle equipment. The two officers received specific training at the Ontario Police College.

The program could be expanded in the future to include up to six officers.
