MANILA, Philippines - Motorcycle is the most dangerous mode of transportation in the country, based on the latest report of the Department of Health (DOH) issued on Tuesday.
The DOH's National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) said that a total of 3,077 vehicular accident-related injuries have been reported in 77 government and private hospitals around the country during the first 3 months of 2010.
"The motorcycle was the most common mode of transport of the injured..." the NEISS said in its report.
It said 55.4% of the injured victims were riding motorcycles while 15.1% were occupants of jeepney, cargo trucks and other means of transportation.
The report said that majority or 99% of the injured victims made it alive in hospitals, but 66% of those reported dead upon arrival were motorcycle riders.
It said that the primary reason of the road accidents is drunk driving.
Meanwhile, the same report said collision accidents accounts for 41.2% of the cases and almost half or 45.1% took place in Central Luzon.
It said the 61.5% of the accidents happened between 8 a.m. and 7:59 p.m. and 76% of the patients are male and 24 are females.
In a press release on the NEISS report, the DOH said that the use of safety helmets and refraining from drunk driving are the best ways to avoid deaths in vehicular accidents.
The DOH also urged lawmakers to "hasten the passing of legislation on drunk driving and use of safety helmets for motorcycle riders."
