  • AE14: An Overview of the Two Wheeler Launches at Auto Expo 2014

A list of all the new launches at the Auto Expo 2014.

    DSK Hyosung Aquila GV 250

The Aquila GV 250 is launched at Rs 2.69 Lakh Ex - Showroom New Delhi. The bike is targeted at the younger audience with its smaller capacity engine and its substantially lower price tag. The company hopes to rope in buyers who currently have no option for cruisers in this capacity range. The GV 250 is powered with a 249cc oil cooled, V-twin engine that produces 26 bhp and 22 Nm of torque. The front gets a disc but the rear sports drum brakes. The bike sports the requisite amount of chrome that a buyer would want in a cruiser and for all those interested in this bike, bookings have already started.

    Harley Davidson Street 750

The Harley Davidson Street 750 was launched at the AE14 at a tantalizing price of Rs. 4.1 Lakh Ex-Showroom. This will be the cheapest model to be sold in India through its 13 dealerships in the country. The Street 750 will have some parts which are sourced in India, thus helping in keeping costs down. Booking for this bike will begin on the 1st of March and this model will be exported to various countries as well.

    Hero HX 250R

The Hero HX 250R was recently unveiled sporting a 31ps single cylinder engine. The 4 valve FI mill propels the motorcycle from 0-60 kmph in just 2.7 secondsHero Hastur

Hero showcased its 620cc concept the Hastur at the Auto Expo. The naked concept bike has a water cooled engine which produces 80ps @ 9600 rpm. The engine also is used as a stressed member of the chassis, which helps in weight reduction, other than the fact that the engine has been designed in as compact a manner as possible. The bike received a fantastic response from the audience at the Expo, but expect this motorcycle in the distant future and probably a much watered down version as well. But as a concept it is a great initiative by the company to show the direction that they intend taking.

    Hero Zir

The Hero ZIR is a 150cc scooter which the company hopes to launch by the first quarter of FY16. But that being little more than a year away, might seem a tad bit unlikely. Mr. Munjal believes that the scooter market will be growing substantially in the near future and thus showcased the Dash and Dare, a 110cc and 125cc respectively. The company has increased its scooter production by 25% for the very same reason. The Dash is expected in the first half, while the Dare is expected in the second half of FY15.

    Hero Splendor Classic

The latest in the Hero Splendor series, the Classic, promises a mix of old world style and modern charm! The bike is targeted at the many Splendor loyalists, who are looking for new styling, but with the reliability of the Splendor series. How well would this do in the market, is anybody's guess.

    Hero Passion Pro TR

The new 100-cc Passion Pro TR offers an adventurous ride to young Indian bikers with its ability to take them off the conventional roads. The Passion Pro TR offers an exciting off-pavement ride capacity with its host of new external features that includes on-off tyres, sturdier handlebars with cross brace, high front fender, hugger front fender, headlight grill , hand guards for added protection, bash plate and fuel tank pads. Adding extra punch to the styling are the all new colours and graphics.

    Honda CBR 650F

The Honda CBR 650F is a 649cc inline 4 cylinder motorcycle which produces 86 bhp at 11000 rpm and 63 Nm of torque at 8000 rpm. This CBR weighs in at 208 kg and is expected to be sold in India by mid 2015. This will be assembled in India for export as well and will be the largest capacity motorcycle to be assembled in the country. The bike will be featuring ABS as standard and has been tuned for peak torque at lower rpms, thus making it a capable touring machine. With styling cues being borrowed from the larger capacity CBR, this is quite a head turner.

    Honda CBR 500

The Honda CBR 500 was shown at the Auto Expo 2014 as a global model, with no mention of this motorcycle being brought to India anytime in the near future. The absence of any information regarding the tentative launch of this motorcycle and the absence of the 400 series of bikes, means that Honda will probably be bringing in the CBR 300 into the country, which will be sold alongside the 650F, which will be assembled in India. This will come as a major disappointment for many fans who were looking for the 400/ 500 variants of these affordable Hondas.

    Honda Activa 125

Honda launched the Activa 125 to build on the success of its flagship scooter model the Activa 110. This is the new 125cc engine, which Honda claims will give the best of both worlds in the form of power and mileage. This scooter will retail for slightly more than the 110cc current model. The bike visually resembles the 110cc, and sports tubeless tyres, optional disc brakes, combi brakes and telescopic forks.

    Honda CX-01 Concept

The concept bike displayed by Honda, was the CX-01 which got many tongues wagging and heads turning. This bike is assumed to be running the same frame and engine as the CBR 250R. This will probably be along the same lines as the 500 series, with a CBR 500R, CB 500 and CB 500X. This can be expected to be called the CB 500X and thus the name CX-01! Details of the motorcycle are sketchy and launch dates are even more vague.

    Yamaha Cygnus Alpha

Yamaha launched the Cygnus Alpha scooter at a price of Rs. 49518/- ex-showroom Delhi with a view to sell 2 lakh units per annum. The 113cc scooter comes with a claimed mileage of 62kmpl, and will be available in 5 colours. Yamaha expects the growth of scooters to be in the range of 15% per annum, and Yamaha hopes to grow above the industry average at 30%.

    Mahindra Centuro Disc

Mahindra 2 wheelers in an attempt to build on the success of the Centuro, have launched another version of the bike, with a disc brake at the front and tubeless tyres. The rest of the bike remains the same, with the MCi-5 engine, with an ARAI tested 85.4 kmpl mileage. Pricing for the Centuro O1-D version has not yet been announced, but a premium of Rs. 2000/- is expected. Along with this Mahindra also showcased a cafe racer and scrambler version of the Centuro. The bike is available with a 5 year warranty.

    Mahindra Mojo

The Mahindra Mojo was once again showcased at the Auto Expo this year, with a completely revamped look, after taking feedback from the earlier iteration of the motorcycle the company had showcased. The company has developed the bike further not just in looks but also in technology in partnership with their global advisors and the Mahindra Racing Team in Moto3. The Mojo is said to be ready for production and is expected by June 2014. Mahindra will be placing the Mojo as its flagship product in the country and has thus gone to great pains to ensure that it is well received by the enthusiasts. The 300cc motorcycle will be liquid cooled, single cylinder engine which will produce around 27 bhp, it will also sport a 6 speed gearbox. The bike is shod with Pirellis and will have USD forks.

    Vespa S

The Vespa S is the next scooter that the Piaggio group will be launching in India after the success that the other variants of the Vespa range of scooters have had in the country. This is expected to hit the markets within the next few weeks. The premium range of scooters was launched 2 years ago in the country and has received a very positive response. The S varies from the other Vespas in the styling department, with the scoot sporting a square headlight and minimalist design, giving it a very classic look. This is one of the best sellers for the Piaggio group the world over along with the Piaggio Liberty. The Liberty range of scooters has been very widely accepted by the global market, because of its 'ease of use' design and large wheels. This scooter is also expected in India within the calendar year.

    Suzuki Gixxer 155

The Suzuki Gixxer was launched in January, just before the Auto Expo, as the company wanted to ensure that the bike gets maximum eyeballs. The bike will only be available in the middle of this calendar year. The Gixxer will be Suzuki's flagship model in the country and will be sold alongside the GS150. The company believes that the two motorcycles are very different and will not eat into each other's sales. The Gixxer is aimed at the young college going crowd, with its good looks and powerful engine. The GS on the other hand is more commuterish. The Gixxer will also be a test platform for the company to see the fans reception towards the legendary Gixxer name being used in a 150cc motorcycle and will subsequently launch a quarter litre along the same lines.

    Suzuki Let's

The Suzuki Let's is the company's foray into the lighter, female specific scooter market. The Let's had been recently launched by Bollywood actor Parineeti Chopra. The 110cc scooter promises to be light and nimble and easy for women to handle in traffic. The scooter claims a fuel efficiency of 63kmpl. The Let's will be available in 5 different colours. The Let's will be available in the market by April 2014.

    Suzuki Inazuma

The Inazuma was also showcased by Suzuki at the Auto Expo as the motorcycle had been launched at an extremely low key affair in January 2014. Pricing of the Inazuma had left many prospective buyers disappointed. Suzuki hopes to sell around 200 units of this motorcycle in its first year, but does not consider the Inazuma as a benchmark for pushing numbers, as the pricing has been left premium, since the quality and fit and finish is world class and expected to positively surprise its owners. The Inazuma might also be soon joined by a faired quarter litre bike along the Gixxer theme, depending on the market response to the Gixxer 155 and the Inazuma.

    Suzuki V-Strom 1000

Suzuki added another bike to its arsenal of Superbikes in India, the V-Strom 1000 ABS at a price tag of around Rs 15 Lakhs. The bike shared the platform of the extremely successful V Strom 650. The bike comes with a v-twin engine and aluminium chassis.

    TVS Scooty Zest

TVS Motor Company showcased its iconic model, TVS Scooty, this time in an all new avatar. The new scooter, named TVS Scooty Zest, is an ideal mix of weight, dimension and handling and is propelled by a larger zippy 110cc engine which delivers best-in-class fuel economy while ensuring better pickup and ride comfort. The all new TVS Scooty Zest embodies elegance while flaunting a design language that invokes expressions of fun, freshness and freedom for young girls. Its soft form blends smoothly with crisp and fluid lines and tense highlights. The company is scheduled to launch TVS Scooty Zest in the next few months.

    TVS Star City

ID:	1980709This motorcycle is expected to be launched in next three to four months.

TVS Drakenshort-stroke, race inspired liquid cooled 250cc single cylinder engine mounted on an exposed aluminium trellis frame. The bike has been specifically designed for urban youth who look for a high performance motorcycle with raw street brawl character and which is packed with technology. TVS Draken- X21 is also an indicator of what to expect from the next generation Apache RTRs in terms of form and emotion. The futuristic and fresh design of the Draken-X21 which is all about thematic evolution, maintains a progressive link to the established Apache RTR design language. Emphasis is on the visual mass around the power train. The scoops on the tank which give the rider an aerodynamic advantage while on the move make the bike look racy even when standing still. An exciting list of visible elements like structural sub-frame, compact headlamp, short sharp tail, aggressive race ergonomics with technological enhancements like full LED headlamp with daytime running lights, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), full function active matrix digital speedometer, offset Mono-shock suspension along with reversed free flow sport exhaust come together in a vivid harmony to make TVS DRAKEN-X21 one manic beast of a machine.

Bajaj Pulsar CS 400 and Bajaj Pulsar SS 400

The Bajaj Pulsar SS400 is expected to be launched within the calendar year, while the Pulsar CS 400 will hit the markets a few months after that. The SS is in its final state of testing and will 'look' as the model on display, the CS on the other hand still has some more work to go. The bikes are expected to priced around the 2 lakh mark.

Triumph Daytona 675INR 10.15 lac (ex-showroom price: Delhi) the Daytona 675 will give Triumph Motorcycles the competitive edge within the super sports segment of the market.

CBR650F to be launched in mid 2015...this sounds tempting to me. And if it is assembled in India, its gonna give N650 a tough competition. Even if it is priced higher than N650, an inline 4 will always be preferred than parallel twin.
