  • Day 34 - 37: Vizag - Bhubaneswar - Kolkata

Vijaywada to Vizag, was the beginning of the end. The end of traffic sense and the beginning of heart attacks induced by traffic! It is weird how drastically traffic changes between the south and north of Vijaywada. People 'know' what is happening on the road on the southern side of the city, but once you crossover to the northern side, all hell breaks loose and everybody moves around as aimlessly like cattle!

At the halfway point between Vijaywada and Vizag is a small town that can never be missed by the riding group - Rajamundry. This place has been a forever stopping point for the core team thanks to Frankpilli who has always gone out of his way to make sure that the team is welcomed and treated well before the onward journey is undertaken. We rode into Rajamundry and had Frank waiting for us to escort us to the restaurant where we had a g2g, cut xBhp's birthday cake and enjoyed a 70mm dosa as well. Yes one of the highlights of this place was a 70 mm massive dosa which Abhishek Bhatt knocked down without a sweat! After the g2g as the bikers were gearing up, the clouds started moving in with a light drizzle. While the cars took their time, the bikes took off like rockets trying their best to get ahead of the rain as fast as possible.

The journey to Vizag was one of the tortoise and the hare. While the superbikes took their own good time to reach the coastal city of Vizag, the Inazumas went hell bent for leather to show that their are no slowpokes either! The AP tourism resort that the GICR team stayed in was located on the beach and gave a wonderful view of the sea and all the sounds that accompany it.

In Vizag since we were staying at the beach, it was mandatory that we take our fantastic machines for a spin in the sand! So the V-strom, Inazuma and even the mighty Hayabusa was dragged down to the ocean. But automobiles are not allowed on the beach without permission, 5 photos of the guards on the Busa made sure that we got in without any protest. We spent a considerable amount of time chasing the surf and generally enjoying the feeling of sand getting into everything that we were doing. After many hours in the sun and all of us sporting a tan a few shades darker, we went for some good south indian breakfast where we satisfied our ravenous appetite after all the running about in the sand!

A few pictures that we clicked in the sand.

      Re: Day 34 - 37: Vizag - Bhubaneswar - Kolkata

After the photoshoot of the morning, we rode into the city of Vizag to meet up with the bikers of the town. The Vizag Superbikers had made arrangements for the meet and we went there with the birthday cake in hand! After a story fuelled session, with all the bikers sharing their crazy tales of biking and lessons of life learnt from the many crashes. The difficulties faced in owning a superbike in India and the general outlook towards motorcycling here were the other hot topics of discussion! After some refreshments, the riders trooped out to line up their motorcycles and get the cake cut in front of their iron steeds.

          Re: Day 34 - 37: Vizag - Bhubaneswar - Kolkata

The next day we rode from Vizag accompanied by the superbikers of the city. We first went to a ruins of a buddhist monastery on the outskirts of the coastal town, where we enjoyed the lovely weather and the sights and sounds of the peaceful place. But we had a long journey to cover that day and we headed on to the the next state Odisha and the city of Bhubaneswar.

We were in for quite a surprise as guys from the xBhp Bhubaneswar chapter had ridden down 100 odd kilometres to Chilka Lake to escort us into the city. They had also planned a surprise lunch for the GICR team, unfortunately for them we got delayed in a traffic jam at the state border and ended up having lunch there itself! Anupam who had been coordinating with the team got a lot of brickbats for this unplanned surprise!!! We finally did meet the BBSR guys and the clouds timed it perfectly by sending down buckets of water as a blessing on entering Orissa! We were not expecting the torrential showers, but the BBSR guys were not effected having grown up seeing the weather beat down on them.

After waiting for the rain to subside, we rode in proper group formation in the wet and tricky conditions all the way to the city without any mishap. We were first escorted to the hotel, from there we went to a CCD near XIMB, where we met the rest of the xBhp Chapter of Bhubaneswar and superbikers of Bhubaneswar. After some more cake cutting and happy birthday celebrations we were once again inundated with rain as we headed back to the hotel and a good nights sleep!
